“I’ve been elected to represent the student body here, but they’re all doing so much cool work and I’m lucky enough to call so many of them my friends that advocating for them and having this leadership role feels easy.”

Christopher Pitzer's love for research and the lab environment began during his years at West Virginia University and not only grew, but expanded, with mentorship from Stephen Alway, PhD, then-chair of WVU’s exercise physiology department. When Dr. Alway joined UTHSC as dean of the College of Health Professions, Pitzer knew he wanting to continue to learn from him while earning his doctorate.

Now a current biomedical sciences PhD student in the UTHSC College of Graduate Health Sciences, Pitzer serves as president of the college's student government, the Graduate Student Executive Council (GSEC) and represents the College of Health Professions on the Student Government Association Executive Council. Although his main priority as a doctoral student is his research, Pitzer will not shy away from a leadership role in his future endeavors. As he says, he's just "out here living the dream."

Hi everyone – please join me in celebrating two of our PhD students, Jamileh Azizbeigiboukani and Blake Rafferty. Both of them were notified recently that they were awarded 2023 NIDCD Student Fellowships for their upcoming presentations at the Clinical Aphasiology Conference in May.

This is a very competitive fellowship that provides networking and mentoring opportunities! We should be very proud that not one but TWO of our PhD students received this recognition. Only 15 awards total were given.

Jamileh is following in her mentor, Dr. Paek’s footsteps, as Dr. Paek earned this award when she was a PhD student. Blake and his mentor, Dr. Casenhiser, have worked incredibly hard to develop and implement a novel way to study the neurobiology of language. Blake started his tenure-track position at New Mexico State this semester and is on track to earn his PhD degree this May.

Way to go, Jamileh, Blake, and Drs. Paek and Casenhiser. You’ve made us very proud!
