Unsheltered:Unseen

Unsheltered:Unseen U:U seeks to capture unique perspectives of Memphis, while also providing a catalyst for change in the discussion about homelessness.

Check out the project at www.unshelteredunseen.org In a way, Unsheltered:Unseen can be viewed as having two components. The first part of the project consists of student volunteers passing out disposable cameras to persons experiencing homelessness. Participants are free to take photos of whatever they choose. The cameras are collected at organizations serving the homeless community (e.g. Door of

Hope, Souper Contact, Idlewild Presbyterian Church, and others). The film is developed, and the prints given back to the respective artist. Through these acts, we aim to provide opportunities for self-expression and ownership. The second part of the project is the organizing of a gallery show. A jury of Rhodes faculty/staff, community members, and students choose photos to be included in a show open to the entire community. In the gallery, the photos are displayed and money is raised to support the facilities aiding Memphis’ homeless.
