We are spending a few months getting to know our Board of Trustees better. Today we’re meeting Walter Spears.

Walter and his wife Valerie have a daughter, Madison (’20), who graduated from Harding Academy and went on to Spelman College. Walter is a Chaplain Manager at Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare. His favorite thing about his job is that he gets to live out his calling by serving as a catalyst similar to the way Jesus supported the disciples on the Emmaus Road.

Walter loves spending time at home working on lawn and garden projects with his wife. He also enjoys auto restoration projects and bike rides at Shelby Farms. His favorite Memphis meal is salmon and grits.

Walter’s favorite thing about Harding Academy is that it has been the place where he has watched his daughter become the young woman she is today. When asked about his deep hope for Harding Academy, Walter replied, “I hope that Harding can actively address social ills by continuing the Christian tradition of making disciples.”

Over the next few months, we’ll be getting to know our Board of Trustees better. Today we’re meeting Brent Patterson.

Brent loves backpacking and hiking all over the U.S. and biking around the Memphis area. His favorite Memphis meal is shrimp tacos from Las Tortugas.

BOARD SPOTLIGHT

Over the next few months, we’ll be getting to know our Board of Trustees better. Today we’re meeting Amy Cox.

Amy and her husband Chad have a daughter, Mary Claire, in the sixth grade at Harding Academy. Amy is a CPA and is a Merchandising Director for AutoZone, Inc. One of her favorite things about her job is building and leading high-performing teams of professionals and seeing them grow and develop over time.

One of Amy's favorite things to do in Memphis is participating in the 10K during the St. Jude marathon weekend. She especially loves running through the hospital area while the children at St. Jude are cheering on the runners. It always inspires her and reminds her how blessed she really is. When Mary Claire's cross country, track, tennis, and soccer schedules allow, Amy and her husband also enjoy Live at the Garden concerts and eating Memphis BBQ.

Amy’s favorite thing about Harding Academy is the family feel of the school. She says, “Our size allows us to get to know other students, teachers, faculty and families and work together to see students explore various interests (sports, theatre, art, band, chorus, etc.). It's a blessing to know your child is being taught and molded by others who truly care and are focused on loving as God loves.”

👩🏼‍🎓 ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Kelsey Hopkins attended Harding Academy from JK through graduation in 2005. She holds a B.S. in Psychology from Freed-Hardeman University and a B.S. in Nursing from Union University. She served as an RN for several years in the ICU at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. During her time at Freed-Hardeman, she met her husband, Smith Hopkins. They have been married 13 years and have three children who now attend Harding Academy: Annie, Fletcher, and Evie Bell.

Kelsey and her husband, Smith, just launched a new church near the University of Memphis called Oikos Church. Kelsey says, "One of the really cool parts of this story is the way the Lord has woven Harding Academy into this journey of planting Oikos. While Harding certainly had a hand in preparing me for church planting, its influence doesn't stop there. Never would I have imagined the amount of fellow Harding classmates, alumni, and current Harding families and faculty that would be a part of our team working to plant Oikos Church. It's a beautiful testament to the culture of Harding Academy and the way it encourages students, faculty, and families to courageously follow Jesus wherever he leads."

Kelsey says her prayer is that the Lord will use this church to make an impact for his Kingdom in the city of Memphis. She wants to see people experience church as family, come to know Jesus as King, and for their lives to be transformed by God's grace.
