In 2012, Union City businessman Bill Latimer looked at his community and saw a gap in available and afforable dental care. So he offered the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Dentistry space in one of his own buildings, plus funding for equipment, and a small clinic was born.

That clinic opened in 2015, staffed by fourth-year dental students and second-year dental hygiene students supervised by a faculty dentist. Nearly a decade later, it has grown into a statewide model, with sister clinics now serving patients in Bristol, Chattanooga, Crossville, Knoxville and Kingsport, and more on the way in Pulaski, Savannah and Jackson.

Students, faculty and staff filled the stands at AutoZone Park for UT Health Sciences Day at the Memphis Redbirds organized by UTHSC Student Success!

Twenty-five years ago today, September 11, 2001, changed our nation forever. UT Health Sciences remembers the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives that day and honors the more than 9,000 who have since died from health conditions related to the attacks.

We are grateful to the first responders, healthcare professionals and service members who ran toward danger to help others, many of whom gave their lives in doing so. That same spirit of service guides everything we do here, preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals for a lifetime of caring for others.

If you saw our most recent cover, you might not have known that it's a derivative of a real illustration connecting the past to the present. It comes from a set of books by Andreas Vesalius on human anatomy, published in 1543 and entitled "De Humani Corporis Fabrica Libri Septem", or "On the Fabric of the Human Body in Seven Books".

The depiction of an anatomical dissection inside the ancient tome is reflected in updated form as the cover of our first Health Sciences Magazine and artfully illustrates the connection between the past and present in healthcare.

By the end of its first five years, the new $350 million College of Medicine Interdisciplinary Building at UT Health Sciences in Memphis is expected to help produce more than 1,450 additional health care professionals for communities across Tennessee, from Memphis to the state's rural corners.

The 300,000-square-foot building will let the UTHSC College of Medicine grow its class size from 175 to 250 students and expand the Physician Assistant Program from 30 to 60 students a year.
