We are so thankful Latisha Harp joined our Compass family! She’s our amazing Director of Student Services and on Friday she took the time to join some of our incredible Freshman from Lewis House as they served our larger community and Clean Memphis by collecting 6 bags of trash and disposing of a tire they found!
Love to learn.
Learn to serve.
Serve to love.
“…students who have close, positive and supportive relationships with their teachers will attain higher levels of achievement than those students with more conflict in their relationships.” - APA Article (linked in comments)
I think we are looking at some future high achievers, don’t you?! Yesterday, many Freshman (including the pictured Adrian) climbed with his teacher and Advisor, Mr Sweeney, at Memphis Rox Climbing + Community after serving during their Morning of Service. Mr Sweeney expressed gratitude for this unique time to grow as a group as they left. Compass seeks out opportunities for teachers and students to develop meaningful, positive, hopeful, joyful relationships.

“Time in the garden allows for team building and promotes communication skills. Planning a garden, planting the seeds and watching them grow give kids a sense of purpose and responsibility. Making sure that the plants get enough fertilizer, water and sun fosters mindfulness.” -PBS article (link in comments)

Midtown Sophomores from Roosevelt House went to the Dixon Gallery and Gardens last Friday. There is a new exhibit in the galleries and the Dixon produced a brochure of what they THOUGHT visitors might want to see. Then they asked our students to spend time in the galleries, take pictures and produce another brochure of what stood out most to them and what would most likely draw students like them into the exhibit. This is an image of 2 of the panels they created! We are so proud of their work! If you want to see the rest of the brochure, and of course the amazing art by John Leslie Breck, you’ll have to visit the Dixon! Free admission!
Last Friday, 15 of our Midtown Scholars from McNair House made 530 ham and cheese sandwiches for their Service Learning partner, Catholic Charities of West Tennessee, to give out to people facing food insecurity. As part of their outreach program, Catholic Charities gives out about 200 sandwiches a day, everyday!!
We are so pleased to support these tremendous efforts!
After completing their service project, one student reflected that, “It will change how you feel. It’s gonna make you feel like you did so much for the homeless.”
We can’t EVEN with these amazing readers!! 😍
