Thank you for such a beautiful and loving sending forth ceremony! Thank you for loving my daughter! ☮❤
If your kids are literally bouncing off the walls, try Cosmic Kids Yoga on YouTube. We did "The Three Little Pigs" and "Trolls" this morning, and it was a great workout for all my kiddos, ages 3-10.
When is the next Pre-K family orientation? I missed Tuesday's
Great learning experience for the children of Libertas School of Memphis. We learned when and why to call 911.What it would be like if your house caught fire, and what we should in case of fire. Overall I think the children had a wonderful time as did. Sincerely Karllee and Daylen's mom.

If there are any other Midtowners with kids going to Libertas, I'd love to carpool. Please be in touch!
We used our 'family pass' that the kids brought home from their field trip to the Brooks Museum of Art today. I HIGHLY recommend the 'Inside Art' exhibit if you go with your family. There are all sorts of wonderful hands-on ways to touch and see and think about art. Perfect rainy afternoon family activity.

Mission: Our mission is to be a school for human flourishing: Cultivating the minds, hands and hearts of children in Memphis for lives of wonder, work and love.

Operating as usual

ICYMI: to promote public health by limiting surface contacts and congregating in hallways, we have wonderful new water dispensers for many classrooms - hand made by the spouse of our primary teacher @kelsiebuono !

ICYMI: for our friends learning from home, we miss you! Please enjoy these glimpses of beautification and improvements we made to the building and grounds this summer! Included in the series are Mr. Janssen’s stunning mural in the George Washington Carver courtyard, @cforresterart breathtaking mural of our mascot in EL Haynes hall, eye-popping upgrades to the adventure playground, our bright and secure new lobby entryway, and lustrous re-tiled hallways and common areas. Hope you can enjoy them in person soon!

Congratulations to our very own Ms. Melissa Rosely, named a Mid-South Hero by WMC TV 5 for both her teaching about our students' history and culture, and her extensive service during the pandemic to the Memphis health care community!

“Libertas has the best children’s library I have ever seen.”

The words of one veteran educator, describing the banquet of literature we spread to inspire our students toward the virtue - which simply means excellence of mind, hands, and heart - of which they are capable.

In our school, cultivating excellence is rooted in an attachment village of loving relationships, and built through the meaningful work of the hand with Montessori learning. But just as an archer needs a target to aim for, we must also help students with a vision of what is possible.

Filled with WONDER about the extraordinary contributions of the diverse peoples they come from... they can find HOPE for the challenges they will overcome on the path to human flourishing.

Here at Libertas, we teach children if you break something, you have to fix it. Sometimes we wonder if these lessons can carry over to the wider world.

Therefore it was a tremendous privilege for our Executive Director Bob Nardo recently to be invited to join District Attorney General Weirich and several Frayser luminaries for the announcement of the COMMUNITY JUSTICE INITIATIVE. This will empower panels of community members to find restorative solutions to crime and its underlying factors rather than resorting to courts and jail.

Here is a picture with host, Lifeline to Success Pastor DeAndre Brown, as well as Pursuit of God Pastor Ricky Floyd and neighborhood leader Charlie Caswell (all three of whom are Libertas parents or grandparents!), and Frayser Community Schools CEO Bobby White, among others.

Please watch a short video about our COVID-19 reentry plan and complete our brief family survey:

We are planning for a variety of scenarios because this is a changing situation. Rest assured that we will continue to consider the unique needs of individual children, especially when it comes to our requirements for face coverings. As always, accommodations will be made for children with special needs, and families will be important partners as we continue to plan our approach.

Please feel free to call our front office or email with comments or questions.

Nikki Giovanni's "Lincoln and Douglass" Read Aloud

Ms. Rosely wrote a letter to Nikki Giovanni -- and Nikki Giovanni wrote back! She mailed us a signed copy of her book Lincoln and Douglass: An American Friendship.

[06/05/20]   A statement for justice and peace to the Libertas community.

Dear friends of Libertas School,
Though lacking adequate words, I am yet compelled to name this moment of profound affliction. As virtual witnesses to the cruel taking of the life of George Floyd, we grieve the death of an innocent person whom each of us, in diverse ways, recognizes could be a brother or spouse, a father or son, a friend or even oneself. This appalling injustice is one more tragic scene (among far too many of late) in a multi-generational trauma.

Many people justifiably question whether they will be treated with basic human dignity by the very public institutions that ought to serve the common good. Racial and economic justice are systemic issues that require a multi-layered approach, beginning in the heart and reaching every level of our society. I sincerely hope that our righteous anger can strengthen our resolve that our little patch of earth at Libertas will continue to be a place where our children, families, and colleagues may flourish in lives of wonder, work, and love.

In the absence of adequate spaces for civil dialog, we are planning discussion forums later this summer for our faculty members and parents, as well as a more detailed statement on our school's investment in justice. Together, we can move forward with deeper mutual understanding toward a more truly peaceful and just society.

Bob Nardo
Executive Director, Founding Head of Libertas School of Memphis

Libertas Families: Packet Pickup this Thursday!

Libertas parent Scott Newstok has just published a terrific new book about education, which can inspire and equip teachers and parents to help form their children’s minds for lives of wonder. Copies will be available to read at school (someday), or order yours now!

Libertas teachers are working hard to ensure that our families have support for their kids during school health closures. We have put together hundreds of printed packets of practice material (including some very creative materials) at all academic levels, and will update these biweekly. We are providing school and art supplies like journals and colored pencils. We are including @coreknowledgefoundation Language Arts readers and workbooks for many grades. We have emptied out our take-home library so that everyone can have beautiful and informative books. All of these are being distributed through a drive-thru.
Teachers are phone- or video-calling every single child multiple times per week to provide tutoring and other support. We also have made multiple online learning tools available - for kids, and resources to help empower parents, who are already their children’s best teachers. And our special education and Attachment Village (social-emotional) teams continue to connect directly with families with particular needs. And thanks to generous donors, we even have shelf-stable food supplies for families needing more nutrition at home, to extend the daily food service available at locations around the city. For more info about this and all these resources, visit the special link on

All of this speaks to today’s important article from @tjweathersbee @ Libertas School of Memphis

Attention Libertas Families, please read:

[03/09/20]   Dear Libertas Families,

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has advised schools to practice frequent hand washing and sanitizing of frequently touched surfaces. We are ensuring that children wash their hands often and reminding them to cough into their elbows, and our janitorial staff is taking special care to sanitize door knobs and other surfaces. We are continuing to follow our school policies for sending children home if they develop a fever at school. We are monitoring the situation closely and staying abreast of any additional guidance from the CDC and the Tennessee Department of Education.
