Thank you for such a beautiful and loving sending forth ceremony! Thank you for loving my daughter! ☮❤
If your kids are literally bouncing off the walls, try Cosmic Kids Yoga on YouTube. We did "The Three Little Pigs" and "Trolls" this morning, and it was a great workout for all my kiddos, ages 3-10.
When is the next Pre-K family orientation? I missed Tuesday's
Great learning experience for the children of Libertas School of Memphis. We learned when and why to call 911.What it would be like if your house caught fire, and what we should in case of fire. Overall I think the children had a wonderful time as did.
Sincerely
Karllee and Daylen's mom.

If there are any other Midtowners with kids going to Libertas, I'd love to carpool. Please be in touch!
We used our 'family pass' that the kids brought home from their field trip to the Brooks Museum of Art today. I HIGHLY recommend the 'Inside Art' exhibit if you go with your family. There are all sorts of wonderful hands-on ways to touch and see and think about art. Perfect rainy afternoon family activity.

Phillis Wheatley was bought into slavery at the age of seven or eight, where her masters saw her talent for poetry. Her natural talent in poetry lead her to become the first ever African American author of a published poetry book. We celebrate her to end every semester here at Libertas, and we're excited to bring our Phillis Wheatley poetry event on 12/17 from 8:30 AM until 10 AM in person. See you there!

November is the month of gratitude! Gratitude is giving thanks for the good things we receive. Today, Libertas is practicing gratitude by honoring the life and work of Jerry Pinkney. Pinkney was an award-winning author and illustrator, and many of his works are featured readings in virtue study. Sadly, Mr. Pinkney died on October 20th, 2021. While we are saddened by his passing, we are so thankful for the gifts that Mr. Pinkney gave to the world. We will continue to show our gratitude to him by enjoying his lovely books. If you would like to know more about Jerry Pinkney's works, feel free to stop and talk with Ms. Rogers, our library coordinator.

As we finish up our month of temperance, teachers are reading the ancient tale of Sinbad. Sinbad received an inheritance from his father, only to squander it, causing him to take on a job as a sailor. While attempting to escape the wrath of a giant whale, Sinbad is left in the open sea to fight for his own survival. Although he recovered, he learned about temperance the hard way. What lesson did you learn the hard way?

Temperance, or deciding when enough is enough, is the virtue for October. Humans want good things in life, but choosing the greatest good is not always easy. Choosing the best things often means that we must deny other enjoyments. Peter Rabbit, Rapunzel, King Midas, Sinbad, and Frog and Toad are the stories of the month and clearly illustrate the perils of refusing to choose the greatest good by saying “enough” at the right time.

This week, every classroom is reading A Story, A Story: An African Tale by Gail E. Haley. This story covers the sometimes overwhelming feeling of a long to-do list before getting started on it. It can be hard to imagine good results when our work is hard. How can we encourage our children to take on challenging work?

In case you missed last week’s great news!

Over the last 18 months, the pandemic has threatened public education as well as public health: state and district reports of the recent TN Ready test reveal that academics declined across the state, worsening the opportunity gap for high-poverty communities.

We are thrilled that Libertas reversed the trend:

Increasing proficiency in all subjects and grades

Earning (again!) Level 5 - the highest academic growth designation - one of just three such schools in our district

Special education students again grew faster than typical peers

*Soaring to the 25th percentile of all schools in Tennessee!*

This is a historic ascent. Brookmeade school was in the lowest 1% of our state just 6 years ago.

But here in the Frayser community, we believe in the best for the least. So in 2015 we began the transformation into Libertas - Tennessee's first public Montessori charter school, now a national model for safe, rich and personalized learning.

***

We are grateful to partners who helped us be one of the first schools in Memphis to return safely last year: the health departments of Mayors Lee Harris and Jim Strickland; the Achievement School District, Shelby County Schools, and Tennessee Department of Education; Gov. Bill Lee; bipartisan federal leaders; and philanthropic partners. With their help, we finished the year with three-quarters of students back in school and zero spread of the virus.

***

Of course the pandemic isn’t over. We have a thorough safety plan based on current research about health in schools. Maybe you’ve seen our new modular classrooms, which are allowing us to have our biggest enrollment ever - 485 friends! - while still reducing many class sizes. We have increased academic and social-emotional supports. We hope you will join us for one of our many upcoming family engagement events - virtually or in-person as appropriate - so that we can keeping getting better together.

The September virtues are Honesty-say what you know is true, and Prudence-choose the right way to do the right thing. Two of our school wide stories are A Story, A Story by Gail Haley and The Empty Pot by Demi. Doing the right thing in the right way can be difficult. These two stories encourage us to exercise honesty and temperance because there are treasures that “practical wisdom” can offer.
