OHS Class of 2020, here is some information on how we will celebrate YOU!! Detailed information will be forthcoming!! Go Wolverines!!
During tonight's School Board meeting, Superintendent Ray announced plans for honoring seniors and conducting District-wide graduation celebrations and ceremonies. We know you all have been anxiously awaiting this news, and we appreciate your patience while we've worked through these unprecedented circumstances to ensure safe and accessible graduation activities. The safety of our students, families and staff must remain our top priority in every decision we make. Unlike small school districts, we have to account for over 30 high schools and more than 6000 students, so the challenges are very different for SCS to plan graduation events on this scale. But with that in mind, we are very excited to announce a 3-phase plan for honoring our class of 2020 graduates spanning May through July. We want to thank the many seniors who contributed to this plan by sending thoughtful solutions through our Senior Strong email. Your feedback helped tremendously because after all, these experiences are meant for you.
First, the week of May 18th, we will launch a new graduation website for parents featuring commemorative programs for every high school, listing every 2020 graduate, that students and parents can download as keepsakes.
The second phase occurs in June, with Drive Through Senior Salutes - tentatively set for the week of June 8th. Schools will be sharing plans for seniors and their families to safely visit campus to receive diplomas and awards, decorate cars and enjoy special senior-themed photo opportunities. Of course, we will be following safe social distancing guidelines.
Finally, in July - we are happy to announce that we are scheduling traditional graduation ceremonies - tentatively set for July 13th-26. Specific dates and location details will be shared closer to that time. However, we will of course be following safe social distancing guidelines and we must abide by any city or state health and safety regulations regarding large gatherings. With that in mind, we will have a backup plan to conduct virtual ceremonies, but at this time, please know our full intent is to conduct traditional ceremonies for our class of 2020 in July.
You will be hearing more from your school in the weeks ahead regarding the drive-through salutes in June and ceremonies in July. Also, we will be sharing important updates later in the week about senior fees and refunds, as well as processes for picking up items at schools. Until then, you can visit our website for more information - http://www.scsk12.org/coronavirusfacts/seniorupdates?PID=1671
Thank you for being #SCSSeniorStrong!

On Saturday, SCS, in partnership with RiverArtsFest hosted Memphis’ first Social Justice Sewing Academy at Overton High School. The mission of SJSA is “Piecing together youth voices, textile art, and community in a 21st Century sewing circle”. More than 50 students, teachers and local artists from across the city discussed social issues important to them and then sketched out how to communicate and advocate for those issues in a quilt block. To complete the project, quilt blocks will next be sent to volunteers to embroider and piece together to create a collaborative work of art that will be exhibited locally in the spring.
Sara Trail, founder of SJSA, will also be working with students at Colonial Middle School and Overton High School this week. Visit sjsacademy.com or Social Justice Sewing Academy on Facebook and Instagram to see more more from students all over the country.
