In 1958, Jessie Mahan Child Care Center opened its doors as the first licensed Black child care center in Memphis, Tennessee. On Friday, July 31, 2026, after 68 years of serving generations of families, Jessie Mahan will close its doors for the final time.

From 1958 until 2007, Jessie Mahan proudly served the Memphis community from the Dixie Homes housing community, now known as Legacy Park. In 2007, the center relocated to its current home at 70 North Bellevue Boulevard, where it continued its long-standing tradition of providing exceptional early childhood education and care.

Although this marks the end of an extraordinary chapter, Jessie Mahan leaves behind a lasting legacy. For nearly seven decades, the center provided quality child care and early learning experiences for children from six weeks to twelve years of age. It also served as a training site for numerous colleges and community agencies, helping prepare future educators and child care professionals. Through valued partnerships with Memphis City Schools and Shelby County Head Start, Jessie Mahan played an important role in strengthening early childhood education throughout the community.



As we say goodbye, we do so with gratitude and pride. Jessie Mahan extends its heartfelt appreciation to the thousands of parents and families who entrusted us with the care, education, and well-being of their children. Your confidence and support have made our mission possible, and it has been our honor and privilege to serve the Memphis community for nearly 70 years.

Though our doors may close, the memories, relationships, and impact of Jessie Mahan Child Care Center will live on for generations to come.
