NSI Spotlight:
The Avon Lenox High School ILT team has worked on initiatives to address attendance and chronic absenteeism over the past two school years, trying innovative strategies with promising results. The team worked with their Seeding Success data analyst to continuously reflect on attendance data, root causes of chronic absenteeism, recognize the importance of attendance school-wide, and provide individualized support to students struggling with attendance.

Team Members: Margaret McKissick-Larry, Vicki Houlihan, Quincey Hargrove, Mrs. Chasati Woelfel, Ms. Brownlee, Renee DeLeon, Rahja Jones, Ms. McMickens

Data Analyst: Alicia Clark
The Network for School Improvement (NSI) is a Gates funded initiative that leverages improvement science to address disparities in educational outcomes for Black, Latinx, and low-income students.

Locally, Seeding Success partnered with 15 Shelby County Schools - SCS District middle and high schools over the past two years to track 8th and 9th grade on-track outcomes, with a focus on improving attendance by decreasing chronic absenteeism and out of school suspensions rates for students. Through this partnership, school teams worked closely with Seeding Success Data & Research Analysts to determine key root causes, identify evidence-based interventions to address them, and test these interventions through rapid improvement cycles, with a long-term goal of helping more students remain on track toward college and career readiness.

All week long, we will highlight the amazing efforts of these 15 schools and the team members that made it all possible!

The majority of schools will be open tomorrow, Tuesday, February 8.

At this time, 96% of schools have power while 4% (seven schools) are still experiencing storm-related challenges. Our goal is to get all students back into the classroom while prioritizing safety.
Our District is RESILIENT and we will overcome this storm TOGETHER!

Shelby County Schools is partnering with the City of Memphis to make free "no-pain" nasal swab COVID-19 testing available ahead of Thanksgiving to help families prepare for a safe holiday. Unlike the deep nasal swab test, these "no-pain" tests only go midway into the nostrils and are available for adults and children. Test results are emailed the following day.

Testing will be available this Saturday from 9AM - 2PM at The Board of Education and 3 other locations across the city over the weekend:

•Appling Emissions Station (2355 Appling City Cv.) - Nov. 21, 1 - 7 p.m. & Nov. 22, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

•Lamar Vehicle Inspection Station (1720 RKS Commercial Dr.) - Nov. 21, 1 - 7 p.m. & Nov. 22, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

•Poplar Healthcare (3495 Hacks Cross Rd.) - Nov. 21, 1 - 7 p.m. & Nov. 22, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

•Estacion de lnspeccion de Vehiculos Lamar (1720 RKS Commercial Dr.) - 21 de noviembre, 1-7 p.m. y noviembre 22, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

•Poplar Healthcare (3495 Hacks Cross Rd.) - 21 de noviembre de 1-7 p.m. y 22 de noviembre de 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

They had a discussion on the changing colors of the leaves 🍁, weather 🌤, animals, and events: Columbus & Veterans Day, upcoming election 🗳, Sports 🏀🏈, and holidays 🎃🦃. They ended with making a Fall Wreath. #AvonLenox #WeRock #OneTeamOnePride #WeAre901

The Shelby County Board of Education is partnering with SchoolSeed to raise money for families with outstanding utility bills during the virtual learning period.

The SCS Board Cares Utility Assistance Fund will allow qualifying Shelby County Schools (SCS) families to receive grant money to pay MLGW bills and prevent utilities from being disconnected. The one-time grant, funded by private donations, will help prevent students from missing important virtual instruction.

“With so many families experiencing hardships due to the public health crisis, it is so important for our community to rally around our students,” said Joyce Dorse Coleman, School Board member. “Without power at home, they will certainly miss out on key instructional time.”

*Weekly Meals Update*

Due to the recent extension of the USDA’s Summer Meals Program, SCS is able to serve more families during the virtual learning period. This extension will also allow the District to provide bulk meals for ALL children 18 years of age and under, not just children enrolled in school, from all school locations.

Starting tomorrow Sept. 3, SCS will distribute seven-day meal packs at all school sites every Thursday. Parents can pick up meals from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 1 – 5 p.m. Parents who cannot pick up on Thursdays may get their meals on Fridays, 7 – 9 a.m.

The child does not have to be present to receive meals. The Parent/guardian will need to have the student name, school and child’s birthday if they are of school age. If they are not of school age, only name and birthday are required.

Find more information at www.scsk12.org/nutrition.

As a supplement to virtual instruction, SCS is relaunching its weekly video lesson series in multiple subjects for elementary, middle and high school students. SCS teachers worked with the District’s C19TV team to create the video lessons to provide extra enrichment and supplement the live instruction for added support at home.⠀

Watch here: http://www.scsk12.org/instructionalresources/#/test

***This new video series does not replace virtual instruction. All students should be online and learning from their teachers every day from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. The instructional videos do not account for a student’s grade or classroom performance.*** They only support the virtual learning curriculum, and in the event that families experience unexpected technical difficulties with the internet or their devices, will also help ensure students have access to teacher-led instruction every day.⠀

These instructional videos will air daily from 7 a.m. - 4 p.m. on C19TV (Comcast Cable Channel 19) and will stream on voiceofscs.com. All video lessons will be available to stream on all Amazon Fire TV and Roku devices. The full programming schedule will be shared soon.⠀
