The Profession

Physical therapy is a unique and vital health profession concerned with health promotion, prevention of physical disabilities and the habilitation/rehabilitation of persons disabled by pain, disease, or injury. Physical therapy is defined as the examination, evaluation, intervention, and prevention of physical disability, movement dysfunction and pain resulting from injury, disease, disability, or other health related conditions. Physical therapy includes: (1) the performance and interpretation of tests and measurements to assess pathophysiological, pathomechanical, electrophysiological, ergonomic, and developmental deficits of bodily systems to determine diagnosis, intervention, prognosis, and prevention; (2) the planning, administration, and modification of therapeutic interventions that focus on posture, locomotion, strength, endurance, cardiopulmonary function, balance, coordination, joint mobility, flexibility, pain, healing and repair, and functional abilities in daily living skills, including work; and (3) the provision of consultative, educational, research, and other advisory services.

✨ 50 Years of UT Health Sciences History! ✨

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming Rita Frix, a 1976 graduate of the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Physical Therapy program, back to campus as a Golden Graduate—50 years after her graduation!

During her visit, Rita was reunited with a familiar piece of PT history: a prosthetic model that was part of the program when she was a student, and that we still use today! Pictured here, she’s holding the very same model that has now helped educate generations of UT Health Sciences physical therapy students.

A lot has changed in physical therapy education over the past 50 years, but moments like this are a wonderful reminder of the history, people, and traditions that connect generations of our graduates.

Thank you, Rita, for coming back to visit and for being part of 50 years of UT Health Sciences PT history! 🧡
