Diwali is a five day Festival of Lights and celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains all over the world. This year Diwali begins on the 12th of November and the main day of celebration is Saturday the 14th of November. Diwali comes from the word deepavali in Sanskrit meaning “row of lighted lamps” and many lights and oil lamps are lit on streets and in houses. People visit families and fireworks and other festivities are also part of the celebration. The festival has deep historical and religious roots so please check out our link tree in the bio for a link to learn more about this holiday!

Lessons and Limitations of Indigenous Land Acknowledgements

Prof. Amanda Lee Keikialoha Savage (University of Memphis) and Zyanya Cruz (NATIVE Rites)

Institutions and communities around the world have adopted the practice of acknowledging we stand on lands that were never ceded by the native people who inhabited them. Many have developed acknowledgment statements that recognize the issue of indigenous land appropriation. During the summer of 2020, a Supreme Court decision recognized broad native rights to lands in eastern Oklahoma, and the Corona virus underscored ongoing inequities in access to health care and other resources. What can be learned from the recent use of land acknowledgment statements? What has been their effect? What should we be thinking about adopting the practice as we reflect on the effects of colonization and neocolonizaton in our communities?

Más allá del fútbol: Afro-Ecuadorian communities of the Chota-Mira Valley and Bomba

Prof. Diana Ruggiero (University of Memphis)

This film recuperates the visibility of the African Diaspora in Afro-Ecuadorian communities and challenge academic assumptions that marginalize orality. A project of decolonization, this Fulbright funded project documents the oral tradition of bomba in the Chota-Mira valley as a means of celebrating afrochoteño culture and raising awareness of their subalternity. Interdisciplinary, it presents bomba and afrochoteño culture as represented by afrochoteños themselves and counter their silence. Más allá del fútbol validates afrodescendant oral traditions and counter the epistemological violence of colonialism and colonial slavery.

The Dark Side of Human Rights in Latin America

Prof. Carlos Gardeazabal Bravo (Colby College) and artist and activist Nelson Gutierrez

This talk explores the connection between cultural production, neoliberalism, and human rights discourse in Latin America, centered in the work of the writers Rodrigo Rey Rosa and Juan Gabriel Vasquez, the artists Doris Salcedo and Nelson Gutierrez, as well as the filmmaker Jayro Bustamante. Gardeazabal Bravo shows how human rights narratives changed in Colombia and Guatemala after the end of dictatorships and internal conflicts, when cultural productions needed to address post-conflict and post-dictatorship settings in the context of neoliberalism. The event sheds light on the effect of neoliberal views on notions of social justice through cultural practices.
