Every day, teachers across Memphis make hundreds of instructional decisions that no curriculum can make for them. In first grade teacher Maura Mitchell's classroom, one small adjustment — adding spiral review and fluency practice before students opened the decodable reader — changed what students could do. Same curriculum. Better outcomes.

"Curriculum tells teachers what to teach. Teachers determine how students will learn it."

Curriculum matters. Teacher expertise matters. Ongoing systems of support matter. These three are inseparable.

Every child in Memphis deserves a great teacher. Could that be you?

If you've ever felt the nudge that you're made for more than a typical 9-5, this might be it. MTR's Teacher Residency applications are officially open. Priority window closes September 2.

There is nothing more powerful than a well-trained and well-supported teacher.

In 2022, none of Jordan Johns' kindergarteners entered the year on grade level. By the end, 34% met grade-level expectations.

Fast forward to 2025: 72% of her students finished kindergarten on grade level.

Same teacher. Same school. What changed?
