This past week, the House subcommittee for Curriculum, Testing, and Innovation heard testimony from Education Commissioner Penny Schwinn in support of newly introduced literacy legislation. As written, this proposed legislation provides all school districts access to curriculum that emphasizes a systematic, evidence-based literacy instruction in all K-2 classrooms. (A link to the full video can be found in the comments below.)

For now, we are watching how this bill unfolds in the legislature. While it is still too early to know where this will land after discussions in committee and the overall impact it will have on districts and teachers, there are still some things you can do in the meantime.

1 •• Join us at RISE on April 4 to learn about how dyslexia impacts kids in and out of the classroom & learn why systematic, evidenced-based literacy instruction is key to reading development.
2 •• Educate legislators about why explicit literacy skills taught in grades K-2 help all children learn to read. Share your story via email, tag them in social media, and let us know how we can help. Your voice is important in providing the context for the work being done in Nashville.
3 •• Connect with us on social media to keep up to date on legislative happenings and potential impacts on kids with dyslexia. From our website, you can join IDA to receive our quarterly newsletter directly in your inbox.
