The GSS program supports our Rhodes students and alumni arrested during the ongoing #BlackLivesMatter protests at Memphis City Hall last week. Civil Disobedience is an integral, effective political performance tradition that has been practiced in Memphis with significant potency for generations. Young people, particularly young people of color and young q***r & trans people - are often the ones brave enough to face state violence head-on, even during a pandemic, and we applaud their commitment to pushing for change in our community and nation by putting their own bodies on the line.
usatoday.com Protesters have camped outside the Memphis City Hall since June 16. The city said the move was necessary to allow for construction.

Lgbtq+ history! The first rideshare service was q***r and donation-based. #TheMoreYouKnow
Reclaiming our history. Last Friday the ridesharing App Lyft had an ipo that valued the company at over $24 billion dollars. Not bad for an idea that has been around less than a decade, but did you know that the idea of ridesharing actually started in our community? Uber took the idea from Lyft, Lyft took the idea from Sidecar, and Sidecar took the idea from Homobiles. Sunil Paul, the founder of the first ridesharing service, Sidecar, wrote about it in a Medium post in 2017. "A friend told me about an interesting service, Homobiles. It was car service started by a local q***r leader for the LGBTQ community. It operated with no TCP licenses. Instead, volunteers drove their own cars with their own personal insurance. Patrons had to make a request via phone or text and could donate money but it was not required. I took homobiles to the airport for a trip to New York. It cost me $20 for a trip that normally cost $50 in a taxi. Wow. This system was cheaper than taxis, nevermind Uber. " Thank you Lynn Breedlove, founder of Homobiles. It is still around and is still a nonprofit. Many drag queens still use it to get to and from gigs. Check them out, make a donation, use them, and know your history. https://homobiles.org/
