July 4th is right around the corner, and the celebrations get LOUD! Save this post for some hearing safety tips!

While the fireworks are beautiful, the noise levels can be a serious hazard—especially if you or your loved ones wear hearing aids. Did you know that fireworks set off just 3 feet away can reach 150 decibles? That is painful to the ears and can cause instant, permanent hearing damage.

👂 4 Tips for Hearing Aid Wearers This July 4th:

- Keep Your Distance: ASHA recommends staying at least 500 feet away from the fireworks launch site, speakers, or the center of the noise. Distance is your best friend.

- Utilize Your Tech (or Mute It): Check if your hearing aids have a "Noise" or "Party" program that suppresses loud, sudden impulse background sounds. If the fireworks get overwhelmingly loud, don't hesitate to turn your devices off or remove them entirely and switch to protective foam earplugs.

- Bring Backup Protection: If you take your hearing aids out, always have a pair of inexpensive foam earplugs or over-the-ear earmuffs ready to go. Never leave your ears completely unprotected near heavy explosives.

- Give Your Ears a Rest: Take a break every hour. Step away from the crowd or music to give your auditory system a chance to recover.

Keep it safe, keep it distant, and protect the hearing you have! 🎆✨

Here is another article from ASHA Leader by a student in our program! We enjoyed reading about finding the right graduate program for one's identity. Thoughtful clinical education and supportive training environments don't happen by accident. It's great to see these experiences getting national attention!

Despite facing a bewildering application process and conflicting advice, a student remains determined to disclose their autism.

Proud to see our University of Memphis clinic colleagues featured in the ASHA Leader for their work supporting neurodivergent graduate students in clinical training.
Strong clinical education isn’t one-size-fits-all, and thoughtful approaches like this make better clinicians.
