Emma Griggs, Founder of Griggs Business College, was a devout member of the Metropolitan Baptist Church (MBC) and served in the women's circles. Rev. S.A. Owen was the pastor and head of the State Baptist Convention. He also served as the chairman of the board of directors for Griggs College. MBC has and continues to be a staple in the black community. A Reborn Legacy: Innovation at Griggs College, organized by Kimberly Bryant 06/02/2023

We look forward to the future collaboration with Kimberly Bryant, founder of Black Girls Code, and her team at Ascend Ventures. Using the site of the former college, creation of the Black Innovation Lab (BIL) will provide mentorship, investment, and a supportive ecosystem for socially and economically disadvantaged founders. The focus will be on tech and tech-enabled companies that tackle critical issues such as AI, climate change, sustainability, health tech, and more. The team believes that by nurturing these innovative ideas, BIL will create pathways to equity and generational wealth. BIL will empower marginalized founders, offering them more than just resources and opportunities. BIL will provide a refugeβ€”a nurturing ecosystem where dreams can bloom, collaborations can be forged, and visions can take flight.

We wish them much success on their campaign to raise the necessary funding for program implementation and sustainability 🌟

It's Preservation Month and we want to celebrate our legacies! During the month of May, we will introduce the great legends of Griggs College. Last but certainly not least, may I present to you Emma J. Griggs (1872-1948).

The Griggs Business and Practical Arts College was founded in 1916 by the late Mrs. Emma Janes William Griggs. The college graduated more than 1,000 students in accounting, secretarial science, and business administration. Emma Griggs started the school in honor of her late husband, the Rev. Sutton E. Griggs, who was an influential author, Baptist minister, and civil rights leader. Mrs. Griggs was a lifelong student and teacher, and she founded numerous schools for African Americans throughout her life. Emma attended the Norfolk Mission College. Norfolk was founded in 1883 by the United Presbyterian Board of Missions to β€œprepare colored young men and women for teachers of their own people.” It is here when her drive and desire for education blossomed.

Thank you Emma for your extraordinary courage and vision.
