Our Story

The Newcomer International Center (NIC) is an intensive, sheltered English program especially designed for newly arrived immigrant students, ages 14-17. We specialize in educating SIFE (Students with Interruptions in Formal Education). We offer English Language Development, ESL, Science, Algebra Plus, Algebra I, Newcomer Science, Newcomer History /Geography, Introduction to Physical Science, World History, Art I, Physical Education, and Lifetime Wellness. NIC is a part of the Shelby County Schools system in Memphis, Tennessee. Students may attend up to two years before transitioning back to traditional high school. NIC partners with local agencies and nonprofits to assist students and their families with adjusting to life in the US. NIC is located in the Cardinal Wing of Wooddale High School.
