Standing Inside Alcatraz. 🗝️

You see it on TV. You hear the stories. But nothing prepares you for actually walking through those cells.
As a reentry professional and a justice-impacted individual, visiting Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary hit differently. This wasn't just a tourist stop it was a deeply personal, eye-opening experience that connected my world to history in a way I never expected.
Standing in the actual cell block where Bumpy Johnson — AZ 1117, held on Alcatraz from 1954–1958 and again 1959–1963 — once lived was surreal. This was a man whose name echoed through Harlem, whose story shaped culture, and here I was, standing where he stood. Same walls. Same iron bars. The weight of that moment is hard to put into words.
And then there's Al Capone — AZ 85, "Scarface" himself — transferred from USP Atlanta, on The Rock from 1934 to 1939. The man who ran Chicago from the shadows, reduced to a number on a wall. It's a powerful reminder that no matter how untouchable someone thinks they are, consequences are real.

The infamous 1962 prison escape — one of the most daring in American history — took on new meaning walking those corridors. Three men chipped through concrete for months, fashioned papier-mâché heads to fool the guards, and vanished into the San Francisco Bay. Whether they survived remains one of history's greatest unsolved mysteries.
As someone who works every day to help people rebuild their lives after incarceration, Alcatraz is a vivid reminder of what the justice system once looked like — and how far we still need to go. History preserved in stone. Lessons written in iron. This visit will stay with me forever. 🗝️
