[07/29/21]   Hello Grahamwood parents!

We are busy getting ready to welcome you ALL back to school on August 9. More information will be coming on all our platforms in the coming days but here are some highlights:

1. There will be no Gear Up for School event at Grahamwood. Parents will not come to campus to see class lists, drop off supplies, meet teachers etc. We know some schools are doing this, however, we have 900 families and a small facility.
2. Instead, teachers will begin calling their families on Tuesday with information about the class as well as how you can join a teacher orientation session via TEAMS. These orientations will be held on Friday and will include all the information you need about arrival, dismissal, and all things about the class!
3. Students will be able to bring small backpacks and lunch boxes (students will not have access to cubbies). Supply lists are available on our website. Students may bring supplies in batches over the first few days.
4. Parents will not be able to walk students to class on the first day (there are some exceptions for kindergarten during staggered entry).
5. Arrival and Dismissal will be very similar to how it was last year. Parents will not be allowed to walk students inside the building, and all students will need to arrive at school via the carline. Grades K-2 and sibling groups (unless all siblings are in grades 3-5) will enter and leave from the back drive, and all students in grades 3-5 will enter and leave from the front door. Times will be staggered to allow for traffic control and social distancing.
6. Students may not just be dropped off on campus; parents must pull to a cone and a teacher will indicate when the student may get out (this is to control traffic during entry). Teachers will begin greeting students out of cars at 8AM.

More information is forthcoming. If you have immediate questions, please email me at [email protected]

This summer, our SLA students have been engaged in a STREAM curriculum (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art, and Math). After seeing how much our campers were having with this, we decided to host a “Showcase”, where each student got to present their favorite project to teachers, students, and administrators. It was such a joy to see all that the students had learned, and to see how eloquently they were able to talk about their work! #DragonsSoar #WeAreGrahamwood

Last week, our SLA first graders worked to design a community candy shop during STREAM. So we invited Jamie from the Memphis Botanic Garden to come out and do a candy making class with us. Our goal this summer has been to bring learning to life through engaging, hands on activities and real-world application: goal achieved!

Week two of the SLA @ Grahamwood is officially in the books and it was a great one! Our theme this week was “Around the World We Go!” Each grade was assigned a country, which they then researched and presented information (using a news-like format) about. We love how our teachers worked hard to make this a truly immersive and enriching experience through text, art, music, and dance. Then, we ended the week with an international food festival where students got to sample goods from their assigned country! What fun!

Today, as our SLA first graders continued to learn about little libraries, our students worked on paper designs for a little library. This fall, Ms. Stewart, our librarian, will work with these students to make this a reality and “plant” an actual little library on our campus!

Today we wrapped up Memphis week with a Memphis trivia game, complete with prizes!

Our SLA first graders (rising second) are learning about libraries (and little libraries) in STREAM this week. So we invited Dara Gonzales, the manager of children’s department at the main Memphis Public Libraries branch, and our own librarian, Ms. Stewart, to come hang out with us. What fun!

Today was Memphis day at our SLA! We read, we did math, we did science, and then we painted 901 rocks and ate popsicles from MEMPopS! Thanks to the Grahamwood PTO for sponsoring this amazing day!

[07/02/21]   Attention Registered SLA families: We are busy getting ready to welcome your kiddos to our summer learning camp on TUESDAY (7/6) beginning at 8! Remember that all drop off is in the back drive in the carline (if you registered for before care, enter through door 5 beginning at 7). Please remain in your vehicle until your temperature has been checked! Pick up is at 3, also in the back drive.

We cannot wait to see you! Don’t forget to connect with us on dojo for all SLA news and announcements!
