Congratulations to Ashwin Subramaniam ’26 on the publication of his research in the May 2026 issue of Neurobiology of Sleep and Circadian Rhythms.
In his paper, “Analytical Amplitude/Phase Markers for Neurological Sleep Apnea Events,” Subramaniam developed a neural network algorithm that uses EEG data to predict sleep apnea events. His research could help make sleep studies more accessible by enabling remote monitoring, reducing the need for costly equipment and hospital stays.
Ashwin worked alongside Dr. Mark Myers of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center on the project from 2023–2025. This fall, he will attend the University of Texas at Austin.

The sixth-grade class, with the help of parent Christina Kurdilla, came together to honor the memory of Julian Swain, the brother of English Instructor Shawn Swain, who passed away in September. Students purchased “Swain’s Sardines” T-shirts, a tribute to Julian’s love for the Miami Dolphins. A majority of the proceeds benefited Julian’s favorite East Tennessee animal rescue organization.
