Abdullah Khawaja ’27 ranked No. 1 among Tennessee students and placed in the top 50 students nationwide in the 2026 U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad, earning High Honors from the American Chemical Society.

Khawaja credits Science Instructor Rosalyn Croce and her AP Chemistry course for helping him prepare. The High Honors recognition represents a significant achievement in a highly competitive national academic competition and reflects Khawaja’s dedication to the study of chemistry.

Our hearts are with the family and friends of Joel Hobson III, MUS Class of 1972.

“[Joel] was really a selfless person in that respect,” said classmate Paul Tudor Jones '72 to The Daily Memphian. “His inquisitiveness was a manifestation of the care and concern he had for his friends.”

Memphis real estate giant Joel Hobson III died on Oct. 6, at the age of 72, after a battle with liver cancer. Friends and colleagues remembered him as an advocate for the city and pillar of the community.

He encouraged Owls to make use of their resources, including parents/family, the MUS environment, themselves, impactful publications, and key mentors.

MUS unveiled the portrait of Faculty Emeritus Norman S. Thompson, Jr., the 22nd honoree in the Faculty Portrait Series, during a ceremony in Ingram Dining Hall on Sept. 24.

Over 53 years at MUS, Thompson taught generations of students while serving as Honor Council advisor, "The Owl’s Hoot" advisor, Summer School director and the longtime “Voice of the Owls.” Headmaster Pete Sanders, Headmaster Emeritus Ellis Haguewood and MUS alumnus Robert Davis ’82 shared reflections on Thompson’s lasting impact on the school and the thousands of students he helped shape.
A fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to MUS and its boys.

Thompson closed the ceremony by reflecting on a career defined by teaching, mentorship, and the camaraderie of colleagues and students.

Instructor in Science Nick Blackwell presented in chapel September 30, relaying his experience greeting the chief of a Māori tribe in New Zealand – and accidently hitting him in the forehead with his head. The chief was shocked, the warriors were ready to protect their leader, and the middle schoolers Blackwell was leading were confused. He used this incident to convey how people bring different perspectives to situations. “Before deciding what a situation means, remember to understand that you are not the only person involved. Your perspective matters, but so does everyone else’s.” International travel, he said, has helped him learn to see the big picture.

Our eighth graders took the podium today for their “Who Inspires Me?” speeches, sharing stories about the people who have made an impact on their lives.

Noah Brafford highlighted his grandfather, a first responder; while Arnav Bhatara explored the life and legacy of Indian aerospace engineer Dr. Abdul Kalam. Collins Blackney shared the story of comic book writer, editor, publisher, and producer Stan Lee; and Henry Boals reflected on the influence of his mom, Michelle Boals.

The Owls brought the Woodstock spirit to Stokes-Alston Stadium in their best themed attire for the Homecoming game and capped the night with a 21–17 victory over White Station. Congratulations to Eva Rodenhiser, escorted by Holden Straub '27, on being crowned Homecoming queen!
