Dr. Charisse Wooding, Principal of Kingsbury Career and Technology Center, and Dr. Laranda Phillips (Coleman), Professional School Counselor at KCTC, recently celebrated a significant academic milestone as they were hooded together during Spring Commencement at Carson-Newman University.
Although Phillips completed her Doctor of Education degree in the Fall of 2025, she intentionally waited to participate in commencement alongside Dr. Wooding, symbolizing the shared journey, perseverance, and professional partnership that defined their doctoral experience. Together, they represent 40 consecutive years of service and leadership within Memphis-Shelby County Schools - MSCS, having served in a variety of impactful educational roles that have shaped students, staff, and school communities across the district.
Throughout their careers, both educators have served in multiple capacities that provided firsthand insight into the evolving academic, social-emotional, and organizational needs within urban education. Their collective experiences as instructional leaders, advocates, mentors, counselors, and administrators became the foundational framework from which their dissertation research emerged. Rooted in practical experience and a deep commitment to educational improvement, their doctoral work reflects not only scholarly achievement, but also a dedication to addressing authentic challenges facing schools, staff, teachers, and students. Their accomplishment stands as a testament to lifelong learning, collaborative leadership, and a continued commitment to advancing educational excellence within their profession.
