Melissa ISD was announced as one of the 2025-26 Texas Art Education Association (TAEA) District of Distinction Award winners! The TAEA announced only 126 districts as winners of this prestigious award. The districts received the honor for providing a well-rounded education that advocates and integrates visual arts curriculum to inspire creativity and build social emotional learning that connect learners to their community and beyond.
TAEA is the leading advocate for the visual arts in the state. The organization has previously honored outstanding TAEA members for work in their classrooms and districts. This is the seventh year that TAEA is honoring districts that meet rigorous criteria as evidenced from data.
Over 1,200 districts were eligible to apply for this year’s award. Each district had to submit documentation that proved they met the 14-point rubric over the 2025-26 academic year. As a result, only 126 of those schools met the high standards of the TAEA and will receive the award for being in the top 10.5% of art education in school districts across the state.
“Melissa ISD has set a high standard for visual arts advocacy, integrated visual arts curriculum, encouraged creativity, community participation and student growth,” said Nealy Holley, Chair of the Visual Art Administrators of Texas, a division of TAEA, “It is a true testament to your visual art educators’ skill, dedication, and flexibility that the quality of their programs continued to provide strong and comprehensive visual art educational experiences to students.”

Visual arts provide students with opportunities to build confidence, think creatively, persevere through challenges, and find their unique voice while making meaningful connections with the world around them,” shared Fine Arts Director Jerry Whorton. “These experiences strengthen the qualities that define our district—strength, stability, and endurance—and prepare students to lead lives of purpose. This recognition is a direct reflection of the outstanding leadership of Jessica Spinella and the incredible dedication of our visual arts team. Their commitment to excellence has cultivated a culture where creativity flourishes and every student has the opportunity to succeed. We are honored to receive this distinction and proud of the lasting impact our art educators make every day."
“Earning the TAEA District of Distinction honor for the first time is a massive milestone, as it places Melissa ISD among the top 10% of visual arts programs across the state of Texas. This recognition happened simply because we believe so deeply in the impact of fine arts for our students,” shared Spinella. “When I offered to help guide our district through this rigorous process, I knew completing a dozen distinct, comprehensive projects throughout the year would be an ambitious undertaking. Ultimately, we succeeded because every single visual arts teacher in our district showed up with unmatched tenacity, intention, and heart. I am so incredibly grateful to my fellow educators, our creative students, and Melissa ISD leadership for their trust and collaboration. This achievement is a true honor, and proves what is possible when a team unifies to build a lasting legacy for our children.
Melissa ISD and all the other awarded districts will be honored at the TAEA District of Distinction Awards Ceremony during the TAEA Fall Conference on Friday, November 13 in Galveston.
