If your child is struggling with how to dress themselves or if you need tips to help them with the mechanics, here is a great visual packet to help. Dressing Skills is a 24 page booklet that provides visual directions of how to:

✅put on pants in sitting
✅put on a coat
✅put on a coat with the flip method.
Using task analysis, each dressing skill has been broken down into simple steps. Create visual sequences for the children to follow along each step of the task.

Have you heard of Structured Literacy? Structured literacy is an approach to literacy instruction. It is the umbrella term that the International Dyslexia Association created to describe all of the programs that teach reading a systematic, explicit way. This approach isn’t just for students with dyslexia. Although it is essential for students with dyslexia, evidence shows that it benefits all students. It’s not just phonics instruction. It incorporates several elements necessary for reading. This image shows some of those elements. A couple years ago I wrote a blog post filled with ideas of how I was trying to implement this. if I had a nickle for every time I heard this mindset nonsense I could have retired much sooner.
The things I hated to hear:
1. growth mindset to overcome poor (or lack of) reading instruction.
2. student isn't trying hard enough
3. retention is a "gift of time"
4. the parent doesn't read enough to the student
NONE of these items makes a difference for reading success. IF a student is failing to make progress in math do we say it is the parent's fault for not doing enough math problems (if you just did 30 minutes of reading....if you just did 30 minutes of math...)
READING INSTRUCTION is the key to reading success.

What is the Alphabetic Principle?
Many parents are having to teach their children to read at home. This can be very difficult, especially if their kids are struggling. After all, they are not trained teachers!
The first thing that needs to be understood is the Alphabetic Principle. The alphabet was invented (it was a genius moment in history!) so that sounds of speech were represented by symbols. This was an amazing invention because it meant that any language and any word could be written down with relatively few symbols. You simply had to make sure there were enough symbols to spells the sounds in your language.
So, when we teach reading and spelling we are teaching kids to decode the sound/symbols code that was invented by the Phonecians, taken on by the Greeks and perfected by the Romans thousands of years ago. This is the Alphabetic Principle. The actual correspondences between the sounds and letters in English is called the 'Alphabetic Code'
English is a 'layered' language that adopted words from other languages (Anglo Saxon, Norse, French, Latin, Greek and more). This has created a complex Alphabetic Code compared to transparent languages such as Spanish or Italian that are so much easier to learn to read and spell.
This slide demonstrates the Alphabetic Principle: how sounds are spelled by letters. Each dot is a one-letter spelling of a sound in a word and a dash has a spelling of more than one letter. Where you have a link symbol - this is a split digraph (a split spelling).

disagree with point #3.....reading to a dyslexic child or a child with a language processing disorder doesn't necessarily make them love reading...reading is a struggle.
