๐Ÿ’ญ Every behavior communicates something.

Behavior may help someone:
โœ” Express emotions
โœ” Escape discomfort
โœ” Gain attention
โœ” Access preferred items

Why does ABA focus on understanding behavior?

When we identify WHY behaviors happen, we can:
โœ” Teach communication skills
โœ” Reduce frustration
โœ” Increase independence
โœ” Build healthier coping strategies

Understanding behavior leads to better supportโ€”not judgment ๐Ÿ’™

๐ŸŽฏ Differential reinforcement focuses on reinforcing desired behaviors while reducing challenging behaviors.

Types include:
โœ” DRA โ€“ Reinforcing alternative behaviors
โœ” DRO โ€“ Reinforcing absence of behaviors
โœ” DRI โ€“ Reinforcing incompatible behaviors

This helps teach:
โœจ Replacement skills
โœจ Functional communication
โœจ Positive coping strategies

We focus on teaching what TO doโ€”not just what NOT to do ๐Ÿ’™

05/21/2026

โž– Negative reinforcement means removing something unpleasant after a desired behavior occurs.

Example:
๐Ÿ“š Completing homework to stop reminders
๐ŸŽง Putting on headphones to reduce loud noise

The behavior increases because something uncomfortable was removed.

Negative reinforcement is often misunderstoodโ€”but itโ€™s simply part of how behavior works.

05/20/2026

โœจ Positive reinforcement = adding something motivating after a behavior to increase it in the future.

Examples:
โœ” Praise
โœ” Extra free time
โœ” Tokens/rewards
โœ” Favorite activities

Positive reinforcement helps:
๐Ÿ’™ Build confidence
๐Ÿ’™ Increase motivation
๐Ÿ’™ Encourage learning

Focus on what you WANT to see more of.

05/19/2026

๐Ÿง  Positive and negative donโ€™t mean โ€œgoodโ€ or โ€œbad.โ€

In ABA:
โž• Positive = adding something
โž– Negative = removing something

Examples:
โœ” Positive reinforcement = adding praise
โœ” Negative reinforcement = removing discomfort after a desired behavior

These terms describe HOW behavior changes happenโ€”not whether something is โ€œgoodโ€ or โ€œbad.โ€

Understanding behavior helps us teach more effectively ๐Ÿ’™

โš ๏ธ Understanding punishment in ABA.

Punishment refers to strategies that decrease the likelihood of a behavior happening again.

But hereโ€™s whatโ€™s important:
๐Ÿ’™ ABA focuses heavily on teaching replacement skills and reinforcing positive behaviors.

Our goal is always:
โœ” Skill-building
โœ” Safety
โœ” Communication
โœ” Positive growth

Behavior support should always be compassionate and individualized.

05/15/2026

๐Ÿ† Reinforcement helps behaviors grow.

In ABA, reinforcement means adding something motivating after a behavior to increase the chance it happens again.

Reinforcement can include:
โœ” Social praise
โœ” Preferred activities
โœ” Tokens/reward systems
โœ” Sensory experiences

When motivation is meaningful, learning becomes more successful ๐Ÿ’™
