๐ญ Every behavior communicates something.
Behavior may help someone:
โ Express emotions
โ Escape discomfort
โ Gain attention
โ Access preferred items
Why does ABA focus on understanding behavior?
When we identify WHY behaviors happen, we can:
โ Teach communication skills
โ Reduce frustration
โ Increase independence
โ Build healthier coping strategies
Understanding behavior leads to better supportโnot judgment ๐

๐ฏ Differential reinforcement focuses on reinforcing desired behaviors while reducing challenging behaviors.
Types include:
โ DRA โ Reinforcing alternative behaviors
โ DRO โ Reinforcing absence of behaviors
โ DRI โ Reinforcing incompatible behaviors
This helps teach:
โจ Replacement skills
โจ Functional communication
โจ Positive coping strategies
We focus on teaching what TO doโnot just what NOT to do ๐
05/21/2026
โ Negative reinforcement means removing something unpleasant after a desired behavior occurs.
Example:
๐ Completing homework to stop reminders
๐ง Putting on headphones to reduce loud noise
The behavior increases because something uncomfortable was removed.
Negative reinforcement is often misunderstoodโbut itโs simply part of how behavior works.

โจ Positive reinforcement = adding something motivating after a behavior to increase it in the future.
Examples:
โ Praise
โ Extra free time
โ Tokens/rewards
โ Favorite activities
Positive reinforcement helps:
๐ Build confidence
๐ Increase motivation
๐ Encourage learning
Focus on what you WANT to see more of.

๐ง Positive and negative donโt mean โgoodโ or โbad.โ
In ABA:
โ Positive = adding something
โ Negative = removing something
Examples:
โ Positive reinforcement = adding praise
โ Negative reinforcement = removing discomfort after a desired behavior
These terms describe HOW behavior changes happenโnot whether something is โgoodโ or โbad.โ
Understanding behavior helps us teach more effectively ๐

โ ๏ธ Understanding punishment in ABA.
Punishment refers to strategies that decrease the likelihood of a behavior happening again.
But hereโs whatโs important:
๐ ABA focuses heavily on teaching replacement skills and reinforcing positive behaviors.
Our goal is always:
โ Skill-building
โ Safety
โ Communication
โ Positive growth
Behavior support should always be compassionate and individualized.

๐ Reinforcement helps behaviors grow.
In ABA, reinforcement means adding something motivating after a behavior to increase the chance it happens again.
Reinforcement can include:
โ Social praise
โ Preferred activities
โ Tokens/reward systems
โ Sensory experiences
When motivation is meaningful, learning becomes more successful ๐
