Melbourne’s Time Travelers’ Society

Brevard County’s youngest town, Grant-Valkaria, will celebrate its 20th anniversary next month. It was incorporated on July 25, 2006, after residents approved a referendum.

Long before that, Indigenous peoples lived along the Indian River Lagoon, where shell mounds show the area was once home to the Ais people.

In the late 19th century, the fishing communities of Grant and Valkaria were settled by a small number of families, including Danish immigrants. Valkaria received a post office in 1890, followed by Grant in 1891. After the railroad arrived in 1912, cattle ranching expanded in the area, and about 1930, Roy Couch founded the Couch Manufacturing Co., which built marine dredges and pumps and employed many residents during the Depression.

In 2004, residents began an effort to incorporate to preserve the character of both communities. The state Legislature approved the action in May 2006, and Gov. Jeb Bush signed it into law on June 15, 2006.

Join us as Melbourne High School celebrates the 50th Anniversary of our iconic Liberty Bell on Saturday, May 23, 2026, from 10:00–11:00 a.m.

Originally built and installed in 1976 by the Melbourne High School Building Trade Class, the Liberty Bell has stood for fifty years as a proud symbol of our school’s history, tradition, and Bulldog spirit. This special ceremony will honor the students and teachers who helped create a lasting piece of Melbourne High history.

Come celebrate this unforgettable milestone, reconnect with fellow Bulldogs, and be part of a truly historic moment for our school community. We look forward to celebrating with you!
