BSN NEWS: BREVARD BRINGS HOME TWO FLASHYS AS TOM DOOLEY AND SCOTT CORSO EARN STATEWIDE HONORS
By: Alan Zlotorzynski | Brevard Sports Network
Last week, Brevard Sports Network profiled three of Brevard County’s own after they were named finalists for some of the highest honors in Florida high school athletics at the FHSAA FLASHYS Awards.
On Saturday night, two of those finalists returned home as statewide winners.
Longtime Melbourne Central Catholic baseball coach Tom Dooley was named FHSAA Male Coach of the Year, while MCOA Football Commissioner Scott Corso captured FHSAA Male Official of the Year honors at the Florida Leadership & Athletic Sports Honors Yearly Awards (FLASHYS), the FHSAA’s premier annual celebration recognizing excellence in education-based athletics across the Sunshine State.
Brevard County nearly completed a clean sweep as recently retired Melbourne Central Catholic Athletic Director Lenny Paoletti was also recognized as a finalist for Male Educator of the Year, capping an outstanding showing for the Space Coast on one of the biggest nights in Florida high school sports.
Dooley’s selection comes after completing his 38th season leading the MCC baseball program.
The longest-tenured head coach in any high school sport in Brevard County, he has compiled 688 career victories, captured two FHSAA state championships, guided the Hustlers to 20 regional appearances, and built one of the top baseball programs in the state.
Corso’s award recognizes nearly two decades of excellence in football officiating. The MCOA Football Commissioner has earned assignments in some of Florida’s biggest games, including the 2024 FHSAA State Semifinals and the 2025 Class 5A State Championship Game, while also serving as a mentor and leader for officials throughout the state.
Paoletti’s recognition as a finalist for Male Educator of the Year caps a remarkable career in athletic administration. During stops at Holy Trinity, Saint Stephen’s Episcopal School, and Melbourne Central Catholic, he established a reputation for building championship athletic departments while helping more than 130 student-athletes continue their careers at the collegiate level.
The trio’s recognition is a testament to the outstanding coaches, educators, and officials who continue to make Brevard County one of the premier high school athletic communities in Florida.
BSN SAYS
State championships are special. Statewide recognition among your peers is even rarer.
For Tom Dooley and Scott Corso to bring home FLASHYS awards, while Lenny Paoletti was recognized as one of Florida’s top educators, speaks volumes about the quality of leadership found right here on the Space Coast.
Two winners. Three finalists. One incredible night for Brevard County athletics.
