For Singles, This Time of Year Sucks!
Yes, it’s that time of year, again. New Year’s Resolutions, Valentine’s Day, and the winter blues; especially if you are alone. Couples making plans for a romantic Valentine’s Day, marriage proposals and resolutions to be more loving towards each other, etc. Just a down right “sugary sweet” time!
But for those who are single, divorced or widow the months of January – March can be a very depressing and lonely time of year. Su***de rates soar this time of year. But it doesn’t have to be this way!
There are many ways to connect to people in general and to longtime friends. Make a resolution to meet one new person per week. If you are not the kind of person that would naturally speak to strangers, try and change this. If you see someone of the opposite s*x, that looks interesting; find a way to go speak to them. Ask them a question to get a conversation going. In the grocery store, this can be accomplished by asking how to cook a certain type of vegetable. If the person responds curtly, afraid or uninterested; just say you’re sorry and you meant no harm. Say “Have a nice day” and walk away. Be positive, don’t retaliate or say something nasty to the person. Hey, you just reached out to someone, so you’re making progress! Give yourself a pat on the back and try again. Don’t be discouraged.
Churches and Synagogues are an avenue to meet new people. If your church already has a “Singles” group of some type, join it. If it doesn’t, speak with your pastor or minister about possibly starting one. If you see someone in church that you find to your liking; go up and say “Hello” and introduce yourself. Talk about the sermon, great weather, anything! Once again, stay positive.
Online dating websites are another tool to use in the search for a potential date and/or partner. A good profile along with a recent photo can go a long way to attracting the right kinds of people for you. Make sure your profile wording is not negative or too “sweet”. Make sure you have recent photos! Not ones taken years ago, are blurry or just look awful.
Speaking of “staying positive”; be Happy! Yes, just present yourself as happy. This can be very difficult when you’re not feeling it. Stop and think about all the positives you DO have in your life. Good job? Nice boss and coworkers? Comfortable living space with awesome neighbors? Friends that make you laugh and share your tears at the same time? A beloved pet, who sits with you no matter how you’re feeling? Look around you. Take a walk in a county or state park. Enjoy all the beauty that Mother Nature has to offer. Just getting back to nature and a little sunshine can lift your spirts. If you live up north, look at the winter wonderland nature is displaying. The snow and ice hanging from trees, glistening in the sun. Little birds chirping. Nobody wants to sit across from a sour-puss! Especially a new potential date, please don’t carry on about all your life’s troubles. Nobody wants to hear that, NOBODY!
So this winter try a few of things mentioned here, and you will see that the world around you is not so bleak and lonely after all.
