Students in the Give Back Pack at Blades Elementary were recognized during tonight's Board of Education meeting for all the incredible work they’ve been doing to make our community a better place! Their efforts this school year include Christmas caroling at a skilled care facility, collecting food for families in need, raking leaves and distributing mums in neighborhoods, and cleaning cages at the Humane Society.

Thank you to the students and staff at Blades for caring for our community like this!

The students and staff of Rogers Elementary hosted a wonderful Veterans Day Breakfast this morning! As veterans arrived, students lined up outside the building to salute them. The students then gave a musical performance and read letters they had written to thank veterans for their service. It was a special event for everyone in attendance!

At last week’s Mehlville School District Board of Education Meeting, the district shared the incredible progress that has been made with our MAP scores. This chart consolidates some of the data presented at the meeting and shows how our MAP test proficiency rates changed when comparing 2024 to 2023 scores. As you can see, the district realized significant improvements across most categories for students testing proficient or advanced. Many areas showed gains of 5–14%, which allowed us to outperform state-level changes in 15 of the 18 categories—often by a wide margin!

This is a tremendous achievement! The efforts required to accomplish this type of growth by our students, teachers and administrators was immense, and everyone involved should take great pride in what they’ve accomplished!

Huge shout out to this student / teacher combo for being a part of the team that constructed a new treehouse for John Cary Early Childhood Center! This team is part of the Geometry in Construction program at Mehlville High School that teaches geometry through real world applications such as constructing structures like this treehouse.

The treehouse is nestled in the John Cary Outdoor Lab, which is a point of pride for staff at John Cary and Parents as Teachers. Many staff members and other community volunteers have helped develop this wonderful area for pre-school students to experience learning opportunities in nature.

Earlier today I had a wonderful time helping to celebrate our retirees and their over 400 years of combined service to the students in the Mehlville School District! It was honor to share a lunch table with Darrel Sewell and Scott Lancaster from our Facilities Department. Darrel’s retirement plans include a lot of fishing and Scott’s plans include a lot of golfing. Those sound like great retirement plans to me!!!

Here are some incredible stats showcasing the impact the Mehlville School District Health Services Team has had on our students through the first half of this school year.

Total Visits (includes meds): 98,113
Medication Visits: 22,849
Students Sent Home: 4,430
Total Telephone Calls: 13,345

This is all accomplished by a team of approximately 30 health care professionals! To our nurses, administrators, and all members of the Health Services Team: THANK YOU for your tireless efforts and for being the guardians of our students' well-being!

Last week, I had the pleasure of joining several other board members on a tour of the new construction happening at Bierbaum Elementary, and I was very pleased with what I saw! Phase 1 of the project was recently wrapped up and includes a new entrance to the building, front office, staff development area, health room, and storage areas. This phase of the construction significantly enhances the overall security of the building. It was also seamlessly incorporated into the rest of the building.

Phase 2 of the construction is taking place at the back of the building and will feature new classrooms, a new art room, and a music room. Additionally, it is being designed to serve as a storm shelter, as per county requirements.

All of this work is being completed with funding associated with Prop S. The project at Bierbaum is one of the larger Prop S projects in the district.
