While weeding I discovered a spider carrying her egg sac and took this video for the littles at our preschool.

Can you see what I see?

At first, it looked like just a tiny white ball, but upon a closer look, I realized it was a spider’s egg sac. It is that time of year when we are spending more time outdoors enjoying nature and it is also when many of our preschoolers discover that they either dislike bugs or are afraid of them.

Helping littles to see how amazing creatures are, like this mama spider here, can ease their anxiety about sharing space outside together with them. Explaining that bugs and insects only attack or hurt others if they feel threatened or need to protect themselves is also helpful. It sounds silly saying it, but people aren’t bug food 🙂

Let’s get outside and enjoy nature, spiders and all!

So excited for the first real snow fall of the year! What a gift it is to live in a place where nature provides extra fun for us to enjoy!

Discovering what the concept of “change” means is an important one for littles. With an understanding that weather is different during the seasons, we wondered about nature and if it undergoes changes due to the weather. We travelled outside with bare tree templates and the challenge of documenting the stage of growth we could see in one of our maples. The littles observed that the leaves were yellow, orange, and pale green in color and that many had fallen. We are excited to document our observations again as the seasons change and to compare the results!

Last week we began our Letter of the Week Program. Each week we focus on a specific letter, learning it’s sounds (either initial or ending), it’s written formation, and vocabulary that highlights the letter.

It’s Fire Safety Awareness Week at Little Hopes, Big Dreams Preschool! We had an excellent last few days learning all about how to stay safe in emergency situations. Tonight I am working on these cute foam flames for the littles to “extinguish” with water squirting tools tomorrow in the sensory table. I anticipate that we will have the best first responders in town!

Self-Portraits are excellent process art opportunities for littles to begin developing awareness of self and others, as well as of differences and similarities. They can become a celebration of who we are and how we view ourselves and each other.

Our 2’s, highlighted here, are our youngest learners at LHBD and it is clear that positive self concept can be nurtured and explored during even these earliest years. As we discovered our reflections in the mirror and employed our growing fine motor skills, we were able to create beautiful visual representations of who we are!
