At Benchmark Camp, community is everything! 🧡

We are incredibly fortunate to welcome back so many of our alumni year after year. This summer, they’re bringing their talent and passion back to camp as staff members in our Language Arts and Recreation programs! (📸 first picture)

🚧 Pardon our dust...and celebrate the progress! 👷📚

As Benchmark School’s campus is under construction this summer, so are the reading skills of our campers.

At Benchmark Camp, we know that becoming a confident reader doesn’t happen overnight. It takes the right tools, expert instruction, and proven strategies to help every child build a strong foundation.

🏗️ Here’s what we’re building this summer:
📖 Active Reading Strategies – Because decoding words is only the beginning. We teach campers to make meaning from what they read by predicting, questioning, and reading with purpose.

✏️ Young Authors – Every camper has a story to tell! Through daily journal writing, students discover that they are authors, building confidence while strengthening writing skills.

🔎 Word Detectives – Our research-based analogy approach helps campers decode unfamiliar words by using words they already know, giving them strategies they can use long after camp ends.

🚧 Sometimes learning to read may feel like hitting a roadblock. That’s okay! Our teachers help campers navigate those obstacles with strategies that build independence, resilience, and confidence.

👷 Reading is under construction...and the results are worth the work.

Last week we celebrated the retirement of three Benchmark long-serving staff members who collectively shared over a century of experience and service to our students and families.💙

Here is a look back at their amazing dedication:

Tom Hurster (45 Years): Mr. Hurster wraps up a monumental 45-year career. He wore countless hats as Benchmark grew, most recently supporting our community as a social worker on the Child and Family Support Services team.🧡

Maria Michetti (26 Years): Mrs. Michetti joined us in 2000 as a support teacher in the Lower School, and most recently brought her love of books to our community as our beloved library assistant. 📚

Laurie Veacock (28 Years): Mrs. Veacock first stepped onto campus for her WCU reading practicum in the summer of 1995. She transitioned to teaching full-time in 1998, ultimately spending nearly three decades filling our halls with music. 🎶

Thank you for your dedication, your passion, and the endless memories. We wish you all the absolute best in your well-deserved retirements! 🎉
