When DCCC student Tommy McCarthy of Havertown was selected as a paid intern for the 2026 Delaware County Internship Program working in County offices, he didn’t know he’d end up playing a pivotal role in a large network outage this past summer. “Working alongside my colleagues on the outage was my favorite part of the internship. It was a fast-paced situation that was very rewarding to me.” A Cyber Security major, “I first became interested in computers when I was young and wanted to get into video games, and I built a computer to play them. From there I became very interested in server technologies.”
Tommy landed his internship through DCCC’s Office of Cooperative Education and Internships. “DCCC’s Computer Science programs are a great springboard for higher education given their deep networking with surrounding colleges and are a great place to get started. It’s been a terrific way to advance my Computer Science career and prepare for my next steps. My professors have been great and they really motivate me to succeed.” Tommy was named to the Spring 2026 DCCC President’s List, and we can’t wait to see what he does this fall!

Did you know that after earning an associate degree at DCCC, you are eligible for credit transfer and scholarships to complete your bachelor’s degree at a fraction of the cost of a traditional four-year education? DCCC offers a full range of transfer agreements with four-year institutions for students to continue after graduating with their associate degrees—and many of them offer merit scholarships.

Robyn Pate has always been fascinated by the brain and how it works, and by human behavior. “My ultimate career goal is to become a psychologist.” In May 2026 she graduated with honors from DCCC with an associate degree in Psychology. She’ll earn her bachelor’s degree in the discipline at no cost—thanks to being awarded a Transfer Partnership Full-Tuition Scholarship to Neumann University that covers her tuition for two years. At DCCC Pate was a member of the Black Student Union and founded a yoga club, and she enjoys volunteering at her church. “Helping people is my passion and goal.” We wish her the best at Neumann! A former digital project manager looking to add fresh skills to her resume after taking a break to raise her daughter, Esra Yilmaz believed DCCC’s Certificate of Competency in AI Foundations was the best way to start her new chapter. “One of the things I appreciated most about the program was that it was designed for beginners. Even someone with no prior knowledge of artificial intelligence could easily understand the material because the concepts were explained in a clear and accessible way. This program has given me the confidence to embrace new technologies and adapt to today's rapidly changing workplace.”

One of program’s greatest benefits for Esra was learning about the history of AI and the ethical principles behind it. Building that foundation gave her a much deeper understanding of the technology—and the responsibility that comes with using it. “Earning this certificate has been an important milestone,” she says. “It reminds me that it's never too late to learn something new and invest in your future. I hope to continue building my AI skills and contribute to organizations that value innovation, lifelong learning and the responsible use of technology. When Katy Gallagher of West Chester first enrolled at DCCC, she wasn’t sure what to expect. “I hadn’t loved being in a classroom during my high school days, and I chose to drop out and earn my GED instead,” she says. “I definitely had some trepidation.” However, she quickly began to feel at home. “The classes are small, the other students are supportive, and the professors take the time to get to know you.” She also found—to her surprise—that a required introductory class, Communications 101, ended up being one of her favorites. “My professor, Dr. Tanya Gardner, offered me the opportunity to work on an interesting research project with the Ardmore Library,” Katy says. “I enjoyed the work, made some new friends, and found a terrific mentor in Dr. Gardner.”

A Paralegal Studies major who also works 32-40 hours a week, Katy has the following advice for prospective students who wonder if they can juggle work with college studies: “Take it one step at a time. Enroll in one class—just to get going. You’ll see what you can handle, and you’ll be able to add more classes as you go along. The important thing is to get started.” Keep up the good work, Katy!

It’s National Interns Day, and we are celebrating the fact that DCCC had SEVEN student interns selected to be part of the 2026 Delaware County Summer Internship Program. Working at the County’s offices located in the Delaware County Courthouse in Media, the students selected were Jaleel Whaley, Computer Science; Laibah Qamar, Cyber Security; Folly Akouete, Cyber Security; Tommy McCarthy, Networking Engineering; Zharin Tasnim, Business Administration; and Wessan Aulaian, Business Administration; and Daniel Tran, Network Engineering. They worked as paid interns in departments ranging from IT to Human Resources to Workforce Development, and had the opportunity to earn college credits for their experiences. On July 23 at The Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C., DCCC President Dr. Marta Yera Cronin signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to help South Korea-based Hanwha Ocean increase workforce training to meet the skilled labor demands of its U.S. government and private sector shipbuilding contracts at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. She joined U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, other U.S. government officials, and representatives from South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Korea Offshore & Shipbuilding Plant Association, and the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering at the signing ceremony.

Hanwha Philly Shipyard Inc. (HPSI), which operates out of the Navy Yard, recently announced it will receive $1.5 billion in federal contracts to build ships for the U.S. Maritime Administration. HPSI also learned recently that it will receive $1.4 billion in contracts to build tracking ships for the U.S. government. As a founding member of the Collegiate Consortium, a skilled trades training partnership of Greater Philadelphia higher education institutions, DCCC already partners with HPSI. The MOU enhances this partnership and will increase the number of welding, plumbing, carpentry and other registered shipbuilding apprentices at HPSI expected to fill thousands of jobs created as HPSI builds ships for the U.S. government and private industry.
