“People ask a lot of questions about the “Indian” part of “Indian American.” But I don’t have time for basics.” - Hershel Tamboli (A '18)

“Growing up in Connecticut, I always thought I was uber Indian. But when I came to Tufts, I finally started hanging out with South Asians my own age—I joined the Hindu Students’ Council and started having those amazing Maggi-and-K3G nights. Now I can see what I’d been missing out on.” - Ratan Marwah (A '16)

“My dad’s Indian from Trinidad. It’s something that I tried to ignore for a long time, but Tufts has given me a new consciousness when it comes to thinking about my diasporic identity. I’m learning to explore myself from an academic perspective.” - CJ Ghanny (A '15)

“You know that stereotypical Indian accent? I don’t understand why people think everyone in India talks like that. After living in India for the past nine years. I’ve heard so many different ‘Indian accents’—it’s crazy. One time, someone asked me and my family if we were really from India because we don’t ‘sound Indian.’ What does that even mean?” - Suruchi Devanahalli (A '18)

"सुनो गौर से दुनिया वालों बुरी नज़र ना हम पे डालो
चाहे जितना ज़ोर लगा लो, सबसे आगे होंगे हिंदुस्तानी

suno gaur se duniyaa waalon buri nazar na humpe daalo
chaahe jitnaa zor lagaa lo sabse aage honge hindustani

Listen closely, people of the world—don't give us the evil eye
No matter how hard you try, Indians will always triumph"

- Dhruv Khurana (A '17, SAPAC E-Board)

"My grandparents lived through partition and the Naxalite movement. When my grandpa first came to Kolkata for work, he stayed with his aunt for a few days, and then he ended up sleeping under a palm tree for three days. But he was committed to supporting his family, and he rebuilt his life from there. Hearing about the struggles they went through makes me realize they lived through a much more tumultuous time than I ever have—I'm never going to have these kinds of stories to tell my kids." - Soubhik Barari (A '16)
