The School Forest is a unique living laboratory that is available to students and residents of the Medford Area Public School District.

4th graders took advantage of the nice weather and newly groomed trails by snowshoeing at the School Forest this week. Their experience helped build background knowledge for the book they are reading in class as well as provided sensory details for the survival stories they are writing!

Join us at the Medford Kiwanis School Forest for an evening of snowshoeing and socializing in honor of Julee Klemm. There will be luminaries to light a short loop, but please bring a headlamp if you are looking to venture further on the trails. No snowshoes? No problem! We will have some extra for you to use. Wanting to come just for the camaraderie? Enjoy hot chocolate and gather with friends and family around a warm fire.

We had beautiful weather last weekend as we finished marking the last of the School Forest trails. The Aspen Trail was cleared this summer by the Klemm family, finally making it accessible for students. It’s still a little overgrown in parts, but now that the trails are clearly marked, it’ll be easy to navigate!

Thank you to the AnnMarie Grant Foundation for providing the Medford School Forest with a significant donation to purchase new nets and fishing equipment so that we will be able to provide meaningful learning opportunities about ecosystems and biodiversity at the pond this spring.

Thanks to the Taylor County Literacy Council, we recieved a mini grant to purchase picture books for the School Forest. Each book has a laminated card inside with activities, a discussion guide, and journal prompts. They will be placed in the cabinets at the school forest soon to be utilized by teachers K-6.

Survival in the Woods students learned how to navigate the forest using a compass and a map of the newly marked trails. They went on a treasure hunt to find survival tool treasures along the way including a cordage bracelet, mini compass, and survival whistle.

Elementary and Middle School Survival in the Woods students made campfires using flint and steel and magnifying glasses. Afterward, they enjoyed some s’mores! 🔥

In the fall of 2023, Julee Klemm’s family and friends hosted a School Forest Improvement Day in memory of her. The School Forest was a special place for Julee, a former 4th grade teacher of the Medford School District. They helped honor her and improve the utilization of the forest by clearing brush, stocking Dodsworth Hall with art supplies, piling firewood, creating stump seating around the fire pit, replacing the pond dock, putting up trail signage, etc.

This past weekend, they continued their service by clearing more brush on the Aspen Trial, and splitting and stocking firewood. They also worked on getting the aerator in the pond up and running.

We couldn’t be more grateful for the years Julee Klemm dedicated to instilling a love of nature into her students as well as her family and friends for continuing her legacy. Thank you!

Survival in the Woods summer school at the school forest is in full swing! Today, 3rd and 4th graders learned how to purify water by filtering and boiling it. They enjoyed some wild hot cocoa after it was all done!
