A New Tool for Equine Health 04/06/2022

Ever wonder what happens to Senior Design projects after students graduate? In this case, they kept right on working with the client. Thomas C***s, Christopher Simotas, and Brian Barrows, all 2019 alums from Associate Professor Kristen Wendell's class, continued their collaboration with the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. A New Tool for Equine Health When it comes to medical procedures, horses are like children, says Melissa Mazan, V93, a professor of large animal medicine at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. They won’t stay still or hold their breath—making it difficult to test their lung function, which is essential to the success of...

Associate Professor Robert White and colleagues from Tufts University, Cornell University College of Arts and Sciences, and
NASA's Wallops Flight Facility developed a sonic anemometer that recently flew to over 106,000 feet! The team's work aims to demonstrate a high accuracy, high speed, three dimensional ultrasonic wind measurement system that can work on Mars and in the stratosphere of Earth. Breath of fresh air 10/13/2020

This spring and summer, senior Klare Hu and recent alum Courtland Priest worked with volunteers from across the country to develop a new ventilator design that could potentially be produced at a fraction of the cost of traditional ventilators. “Tufts had given me the ability to adapt easily across different engineering disciplines,” says Hu. “While I was working with the Ventilator Project, I was reminded a lot of the hands-on experience I had in Brandon Stafford’s class, ME43 Electronics for Mechanical Engineers.”

Breath of fresh air In areas hit particularly hard by the COVID-19 pandemic this spring, medical workers faced a grim scenario: there were more critically ill patients than there were ventilators available. Some patients with severe cases of COVID-19 develop acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), in which inflamma...
