I’ve been an SAT tutor in the local South Jersey area going on thirty-five years. I have had many students from the local High Schools during that period. Right now, my students and I are busy preparing for the New Digital SAT beginning
in March for the first time. I have gone through and broken the new test down for the kids and know exactly how to help them achieve a high score while having a fu
n time. Each student has a unique learning style, and it’s my duty to find out what that is and adapt my lessons accordingly. My goal is to have every student reach a score of 1300+. I teach my students the proper thinking process to point them in the direction of what the next step entails. It’s called aptitude, the middle letter of the word SAT. To do that I teach them to gather all the information given by the question/problem (Q&P), figure out what the test is specifically asking for, what the four given possible answers indicate, the format the answer should be in. These are the keys to doing well on the test. In the new math section, I teach them to determine the problem type: linear equation, exponential, proportions, ratio, ORT, imaginary numbers, geometrical calculations, trigonometrics, functional, etc. I teach them to read and interpret the given graphs or tables before doing the problems. Nowadays, the students are relying on their calculators so much that they literally forget to do very basic elementary steps. For example, some kids even forget how to find the common denominator. I remind them to use the basics and give them the confidence to succeed. The new critical reading section now relies heavily on vocabulary words in their passages; even though the passages are much shorter than in the old SAT. I distribute my students lists of roots and mostly used words in SAT and go over ways to decipher the questions precisely. Let me know any other ways I can help your students succeed.
