February brings an opportunity to explore new materials on the shelves. Here are the new activities, often referred to as lessons, on the practical life shelf and the language shelf. Materials in the Montessori environment are typically referred to as "lessons" or "work" because it puts emphasis on the child's play and exploration. A child's work may look different than an adults work but a child's work has significant value as they are shaping their development through their play.

Materials presented on the shelves in the Montessori environment are intentional, often promoting development in multiple areas of development, and are displayed in an organized manner. The environment should be inviting and clean without clutter that can often cause overstimulation.

Process art is a great example of allowing the child to direct their own experience! By providing supplies the child works with the materials in anyway they desire. The goal is not a specific outcome. The child can be creative in their own way, exploring the materials and using their senses. This activity allows the child to focus and build concentration skills as well, without the need for interruptions or instruction.

I look forward to getting to know each family, but in the meantime I'd like to introduce myself! My name is Amanda Fenstermaker & I am the daycare provider at Little Oak Daycare. I started working in the childcare field in 2010 with 10 years of experience working in a Montessori based center. I hold my A.A.S. in Early Childhood Development and a Montessori Diploma for ages birth-three. I have up-to-date CPR/ First Aide training as well as maintaining yearly continuing education classes related to childcare and education.

It has been a lifelong dream to teach children and see them achieve milestones! I am grateful to have the opportunity to welcome children into my home daycare and work with each family! My family consists of my husband, Wayne, our daughter, Lillian, and we are expecting our second baby June 2022. We also have a friendly cat, Cheeto, and a spunky puppy, Penny!
