Week 2: Executive Function + Emotional Intelligence = Stronger Success
Many people think **Executive Functioning (EF) and Emotional Intelligence (EI) are separate skills—but they're actually deeply connected.
Think of it this way:
Executive Functioning** helps us plan, organize, focus, remember, and control our actions.
**Emotional Intelligence** helps us *recognize, understand, and manage our emotions while building healthy relationships.*
Here's the connection:
When emotions become overwhelming, it's much harder for the brain to use executive functioning skills like focusing, making good decisions, solving problems, or controlling impulses.
Likewise, strong executive functioning helps us pause, think before we react, and choose healthy responses instead of emotional ones.
These two skill sets work together every single day—in school, at work, at home, and in our relationships.
Quick Tip of the Week: Practice the "Pause–Name–Choose" Strategy
When you notice yourself (or your child) becoming frustrated:
✅ Pause** for one deep breath.
✅ Name** the emotion ("I'm feeling overwhelmed" or "I'm frustrated.").
✅ Choose** your next action instead of reacting automatically.
This simple habit strengthens both **Emotional Intelligence** and **Executive Functioning**, helping build self-control, better decision-making, and resilience over time.
At Cognitive Pathways Coaching & Educational Services, we help children, teens, college students, and adults develop the executive functioning and emotional intelligence skills needed to thrive in school, work, and everyday life.
