This activity is a wonderful way to combine fine-motor practice, creativity, and emotional development for toddlers!

Skills being practiced:

🤏 Fine motor skills: Picking up leaves, holding them, and placing them carefully strengthens little fingers and hand muscles.
🤚 Hand-eye coordination: Squeezing and controlling the glue while deciding where to place each leaf encourages coordination and precision.
😊 Emotional recognition: Creating happy, sad, angry, or surprised faces helps toddlers begin identifying and naming different emotions.
🧠 Cognitive development: Children make decisions about which leaves to use for eyes, mouths, hair, etc., encouraging problem-solving and creativity.
💬 Language development: Talking about the faces and emotions builds vocabulary and gives children opportunities to express how they feel.
🎨 Sensory learning: Feeling the different textures, shapes, and sizes of natural leaves adds a hands-on sensory element.

Most importantly, toddlers are learning that emotions are something we can recognize, talk about, and express—all while having fun with nature!

Did you know that kids benefit from “heavy work” too? 💪

Heavy work activities give little bodies a chance to push, pull, carry, lift, and move with purpose. It can help build strength, coordination, body awareness, balance, and confidence, all while they’re having fun!

At our center, heavy work might look like:

🪵 Lifting and carrying small logs
🪣 Carrying buckets of toys or water
🌱 Helping move garden materials
🧺 Carrying baskets of classroom supplies
🛒 Pushing or pulling loaded carts
🧱 Moving blocks and building materials
🌳 Climbing, crawling, and exploring outdoors
🧹 Helping with age-appropriate classroom jobs

What looks like “just playing” is actually big work for little bodies! ❤️

We love giving children opportunities to use their whole bodies, build independence, and feel proud of what they can accomplish.

Little Hands, Big Learning!

Learning shouldn’t have to happen with a pencil and a worksheet! Sometimes, the best learning happens when little hands are touching, squishing, building, and creating.

Instead of simply sitting down to trace the letter A, imagine your child rolling play dough, forming the shape of the letter, feeling its curves and lines, and proudly saying, “I made an A!”

Hands-on sensory learning helps children:
🌱 Strengthen fine-motor muscles needed for writing
🌱 Build connections through touch and movement
🌱 Develop letter recognition and visual memory
🌱 Practice hand-eye coordination
🌱 Learn through exploration and creativity
🌱 Build confidence by actively creating rather than simply completing a worksheet

We believe learning should be something children can feel, experience, and enjoy. Because when little hands are busy learning, little minds are growing too💚

It’s the little moments that make childhood so special.

The giggles. The messy hands. The “look what I did!” moments. The friendships. The endless questions. The big hugs after a long day.

We get to witness so many of these little moments every day and we wouldn’t trade it for anything. 💚

Here’s to letting kids be little, encouraging their curiosity, and making memories along the way.

Let’s have some fun with some FAQ’s 🌱

Q: What makes your school different?
A: Small classes, hands-on learning, Montessori-inspired activities, nature, play, and a whole lot of caring. 💚

Q: What if my child isn’t ready for “school”?
A: That’s okay! We meet children where they are and help them build confidence and independence at their own pace. 🌱

Q: Will my child get messy?
A: Probably. 😂 And that usually means they’re having a great time learning! We believe in hands-on, real-world play.

Q: What if my child has TONS of energy?
A: Perfect! We have plenty of opportunities to move, explore, climb, run, and play. 🏃‍♀️

Q: Do you believe in learning through play?
A: 100%! Around here, play is serious business. 😉

Q: What about outdoor play in the winter?
A: Cold weather doesn’t stop the fun! Bundle up and let’s explore. ❄️

Q: Does preschool mean worksheets all day?
A: Nope! Learning can happen with blocks, paint, bugs, books, mud, puzzles, and even a stick. 🪵

Q: Does my child need to be potty trained?
A: Every child develops at their own pace. We’ll work with families through those transitions. 🚽

Q: Do you let kids be kids?
A: Absolutely! Childhood is too special to rush. 🌱

Q: Will they tell me what they did all day?
A: Maybe. Probably not. 😂 But we’ll happily keep you updated through the Brightwheel app!

Q: Do you allow “why?” 47 times a day?
A: We actually encourage it. 😂 Curiosity is welcome here!
