Department of Music A minor in music is also available. We invite you to learn more about our offerings both in the concert hall and in the classroom.

The Department of Music at Messiah College offers students not only the chance to grow on their given instrument, but also the opportunity to pursue music in a wide variety of avenues in a Christian liberal arts environment. Studies in the Department of Music complement rigorous professional training with a broad liberal education necessary for students to function effectively as teaching and perf

orming musicians. Messiah College offers four undergraduate degrees in music -- the Bachelor of Science in Music Education; the Bachelor of Music in Performance; and the Bachelor of Arts in Music with concentrations in General Music, Composition, Commercial Music, and Christian Music Studies; and the Bachelor of Arts in Music (Business). The Master of Music in Conducting allows music educators to hone their skills on the podium while maintaining professional careers in area schools and music ensembles.

Meet Genevieve Smith! Genevieve is from Mechanicsburg, PA, and she will be studying Music Performance with a concentration in percussion. She enjoys working out, painting, volleyball and pickleball. A fun fact about her is that for any video game she plays and then leaves for a week without playing, she’ll restart just for the fun of the game! She hasn’t completed a single video game in a long time…

Meet Collin Starr! Collin is from Hershey, PA, and he will be studying Music Education with a concentration in percussion. He enjoys juggling and video games. A fun fact about him is that he and his father run an online Lego business!

Meet John Traino! John is from Harrisburg, PA, and he will be majoring in both Nursing and Music with a concentration in voice. He enjoys spending time with family and friends, going to mass, singing, and reading. A fun fact about him is that he can speak Italian!

Meet Natalie Weidler! Natalie is from Harrisburg, PA, and she will be studying Music Education with a concentration in voice. She enjoys reading, baking, swimming, being outdoors, and singing of course! A fun fact about her is that she knows how to Irish Dance!

Meet Ali Ravert! Ali is from Montoursville, PA, and she will be studying Music Education with a concentration in voice. She enjoys singing, playing piano/flute/acoustic guitar, tennis, pickleball, video games, baking, and shopping. A fun fact is that she is a three-time PMEA All-State Choir Soprano 1!

Meet Joy Roorbach! Joy is from Cape May Court House, NJ, and she will be studying Music Education with a concentration in voice. She enjoys swimming, reading, painting, and thrifting. A fun fact about her is that she will be swimming at Messiah!

Meet Tori Shipley! Tori is from York, PA, and she will be studying Music Education with a concentration in voice. She enjoys reading, writing, drawing, and cooking. A fun fact about her is that she collects rubber ducks!

Meet Raphaella Short! Raphaella is from Mechanicsburg, PA, and she will be studying Music Education with a concentration in viola. She enjoys drawing, painting, reading, and playing instruments. A fun fact about her is that she has a dog named Duke!

Meet Becca Hinkle! Becca is from Weatherly, PA, and she will be majoring in Music (B.A.) with a concentration in voice. She enjoys playing the violin and going on walks. A fun fact about her is that she used to Irish step dance!

Meet Tony Ledbetter! Tony is from King of Prussia, PA, and he will be studying Music Education with a concentration in saxophone. He enjoys gaming and going out with friends. A fun fact about him is that he started his musical career on the baritone!

Meet Abbie Linebarier! Abbie is from Dover, PA, and she will be studying Music Education with a concentration in French horn. She enjoys working out, reading, going on walks, getting fun drinks, and making music. A fun fact about her is that one of her favorite animals is a gorilla!

Meet Gareth Owen! Gareth is from Mechanicsburg, PA, and he will be majoring in Music (B.A.) with a concentration in violin. He enjoys cooking, listening to (and playing) music, coding, and learning new things. A fun fact about him is that his dad teaches CS at Messiah! Say hi to him if you’re ever in Frey :)

Meet LilLee Everett! LilLee is from Hagerstown, Maryland, and she will be studying Music Performance with a concentration in voice. She enjoys design, crafts, and fashion. A fun fact about her is that she has two golden retrievers (a mom and a daughter)!

Meet Savanna Farley! Savanna is from Montoursville, PA, and she will be studying Music Education with a concentration in Flute. She loves singing, hanging out with friends and family, playing piano, going to the beach, and eating ice cream. A fun fact about her is that her favorite color is yellow!

Meet Ellie Fasick! Ellie is from Gardners, PA, and she will be studying Music Education with a concentration in voice as well as majoring in Mathematics. She enjoys playing her other instruments (piano, french horn, and guitar), and she loves to go backpacking, read a good book, or play tennis. A fun fact about her is that she has worked at the same summer camp for the past 4 years!

Meet Jessa Groff! Jessa is from Lancaster, PA, and she will be studying Music Education with a concentration in violin. She loves playing sports, spending time outside, reading, all things music, and spending quality time with family and friends! A fun fact about her is that she took a gap year and moved to Germany!

The Department of Music at Messiah University would like to congratulate Anne McIlvaine as the recipient of the 2026 Presser Scholarship Award, awarded this past spring.

Anne graduated in May with her B.S. in Music Education (K-12) with a voice concentration. While at Messiah, Anne participated in Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Women’s Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, and Worship Community. She served the department as the ACDA treasurer (3 years) and public outreach officer (1 year). Anne also worked as the Music Theory tutor and a worship consultant/organizer. Anne had the privilege of performing as “Hansel” in Messiah’s theatre production of “Hansel and Gretel” this past spring. She has also had the opportunity to teach private voice lessons in the Mechanicsburg area during her time as a student at Messiah University.

Anne shared, “I would like to express my deepest gratitude to my professors and colleagues at Messiah. Without each one of you, I would not be who I am today. All thanks and glory be to God for the gift Messiah University has been to my education, and my life.”

Anne plans to obtain a master’s degree in Vocal Performance from Temple University with hopes to perform and teach music nationally and internationally.

Last week, the Messiah University Department of Music welcomed student musicians from grades 3-12 to our annual Orchestra Camp! Daily, students worked with a teacher on their specific instrument in a master class group setting. Students learned new techniques, polished old ones, performed, and worked on issues specific to their own instrument. The camp ended with a final Friday afternoon concert. We had a blast and are already looking forward to next summer!

In a collaboration with the Messiah University Jazz Ensembles and Symphony Orchestra, Byron Stripling, a world-class trumpeter known for his work with Count Basie, expertise on Louis Armstrong and leadership of the Pittsburgh Symphony Pops, will perform an exciting evening of the music of Louis Armstrong.
