Who are you when things get hard?

Not when everyone agrees with you.
Not when the plan is working.
Not when the person standing beside you is easy to love.

Who are you when things are falling apart?

I asked a room full of educators this question while we were talking about resilience, because resilience is not only about how we recover from hard things. It is also about who we become while we are inside them.

Pressure has a way of revealing our habits, our character, our fear, our courage, and sometimes the parts of ourselves we would rather not see. (I call it our factory settings!)

And for those of us who lead, teach, influence, or care for other people, that matters.

So I’ll ask you… are you proud of who you are when things get hard?

I absolutely cannot believe Dolly Parton is gone.

This one hurts.

Dolly Parton was a beacon of love and light in a world that constantly tries to convince us we have to choose sides.

She never did.

She walked close to God AND in sequins.

She could be deeply faithful and radically accepting. Brilliant and playful. Powerful and soft. Sexy and sacred. An extraordinary businesswoman who never pretended she wasn’t smart enough to know exactly what she was doing, while happily wearing the biggest hair, longest nails, highest heels, and most rhinestones she could find.

She never seemed interested in making herself smaller so other people could feel more comfortable.

I IDOLIZED THAT. It’s one of the reasons I spent a decade trying to redefine the word bossy.

Long before women were routinely talking about owning their power, Dolly was doing it. She wrote the songs. She owned the publishing. She built the businesses. She knew her worth. She told stories about poverty, working women, heartbreak, ambition, motherhood, sacrifice, and survival. And she did it without ever losing her tenderness.

She understood something I wish more of us understood: loving people does not require agreeing with them. Faith does not require judgment. Femininity does not diminish intellect. Beauty does not negate brilliance. And kindness is not weakness.

She made room for people.

All kinds of people.

Maybe that’s why this feels like more than losing an artist.

It feels like we lost one of the people who kept reminding us what America could look like when faith, freedom, femininity, generosity, humor, and love were allowed to live in the same human being.

I loved her.

I’m sooooooo sad.

And somewhere tonight, I have to believe heaven got considerably more beautiful, considerably kinder, and more adept at loving without judgment .

The day the music died.

Rest beautifully, Dolly. ❤️

There is something surreal about seeing your life summarized by someone else.

In the beginning of my career, I TAUGHT leadership. Then… life asked me whether I was willing to LIVE it.

After my accident, I lost all of the abilities I had built my life and career around. I could no longer read, spell, or come close to being the person with all the answers. When I had to rebuild so my daughter and I could survive, my definition of leadership changed forever.

I stopped believing leadership was measured by how much people need you. As people came out of the woodwork to support me, I KNEW that leadership is measured by how capable people become because you were there.

That idea now sits underneath nearly everything I build at BGL. The communication tools, looking in the mirror to learn how the world experiences you, delegating for success, understanding the “why” behind the behaviors that make you crazy, supporting you in being heard and influential from the stage to the boardroom, and loving the people you serve — every single skill I teach is to ensure that you are creating leaders in your wake.

So being included in The Worthy 100 means more to me than I can say because they didn’t simply recognize WHAT I do. They recognized WHY I do it.

Thank you, Worth Minds, for telling this part of my story with such care.

And to the leaders reading this: maybe the question isn’t, “How well am I leading?”

Maybe it’s: “What becomes possible for other people because I was here?”

That is the legacy I want my life to leave behind. ❤️

We spend so much money and time getting customers through the door.

Marketing.
Sales.
Branding.
Social media. (all of which are super important!)

But how much do we invest in the people who determine whether those customers ever come back?

Loyalty isn’t created by another ad or the perfect wallpaper.

It’s created in hundreds of ordinary moments when your people feel seen, valued, and genuinely cared for.

Your team isn’t “delivering a service. They’re creating the reason people stay.

The EQ of your team is the highest ROI investment your business will ever make. PERIOD.
