One of the most common questions parents ask is:

“What did my child learn today?”

When children get older, the answer may be easy to see. They bring home worksheets, write their names, or tell you about a new math concept they learned.

For toddlers, learning often looks very different.

A child may spend the morning stacking blocks, pretending to cook in the play kitchen, digging in a sensory bin, or pushing toy animals around the classroom.

To an adult, it may look like simple play.

To an early childhood educator, it looks like learning.

If you’ve ever visited a preschool classroom, you may have noticed that teachers place a lot of importance on routines.

Snack time happens at the same time each day. Circle time follows a familiar pattern. Children know when to expect outdoor play, lunch, rest time, and pick-up.

To adults, these routines may seem simple.

To young children, they are incredibly important.

At Love2Learn, we are constantly asking ourselves an important question:

“Does this align with the childhood experience we want to create?”

Recently, that question led us to make a significant decision: we removed all of the televisions from our classrooms.

For some families, this may come as a surprise. We were never a screen-heavy program. In fact, the TVs were used very sparingly, typically for an occasional educational video, movement activity, or special themed lesson.

But as we reflected on our values and the type of environment we want to create, we realized something important:

Even limited screen use was not aligned with our vision for childhood.
