Introducing one of our Morning Plenary Speakers at the NAMI South Carolina State Mental Health Conference!

Tyler McKinzey is a flight paramedic, firefighter, and EMS educator with 14 years of frontline experience and 7 years dedicated specifically to EMS education. His background spans ground EMS, fire service, flight, and critical care transport medicine.

He is the Founder and CEO of Beyond The Sirens and the creator, architect, and lead educator of the APX Clinician Summit, an advanced clinician conference held in 2024 and 2025. Following a cancer diagnosis that coincided with a major professional milestone, Tyler intentionally expanded his educational mission to include the clinician experience on both sides of the stretcher. Speaking under the professional alias Flight Medic Berry, he integrates advanced clinical education with practical insight into burnout, identity, and long-term sustainability in high-performance healthcare roles.

Tyler is known for delivering education that is clinically rigorous, operationally grounded, and deeply relevant to the realities faced by today’s EMS professionals.

Learning Objectives: By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

1.Recognize early signs of impaired functioning related to chronic stress, burnout, and identity strain in first responders and helping professionals.

2. Understand how cultural expectations, unresolved trauma, and system pressures contribute to declining mental health before a crisis occurs.

3. Identify practical, compassion-based strategies to support mental wellness, connection, and recovery for individuals, families, and communities.

North Carolina was fun 🤙🏼

We've been a little quiet lately, and for good reason.

Since sharing the news of our CEO and Founder Tyler McKinzey's cancer diagnosis, life has changed in a big way.

In April 2026, Tyler married our Director of Operations, Lily McKinzey. Shortly after, an opportunity came up to move to Montana—a dream we'd been working toward for a long time—and we decided to take the leap.

Between the move, the diagnosis, and everything in between, we've gained a lot of clarity about where Beyond The Sirens is headed.

As many of you know, Flight Medic Berry launched late last year and has grown beyond anything we imagined. That growth reinforced what we've always believed: Beyond The Sirens should be the home for everything we do, with a stronger focus on supporting first responders and mental health.

We've also discovered that while Lily wears many hats, she has an incredible talent for content creation and social media strategy. Because of that, we're growing a newer branch of Beyond The Sirens: BTS Media. She's been busy helping grow Flight Medic Berry, but we'd love for you to follow her journey as well—and if you haven't already, give Flight Medic Berry a follow too.

We're still a small team with some big goals, and we're just getting started.

We are beyond proud to announce that Flight Medic Berry has been officially accepted as a speaker at the ECHO Philadelphia 2026 Conference — taking place in September 2026 at the Sheraton in Downtown Philadelphia, PA.

This is more than a speaking engagement. This is a comeback story.

In September 2025, Tyler Mckinzey — known to many as Flight Medic Berry — was diagnosed with cancer. It pulled him out of EMS, shook him to his core, and forced him to confront an identity he had built his entire life around. But like any great flight medic knows — when the conditions get dangerous, you don't quit. You trust your training, you trust your tools, and you fly.

Now he's back. And he's back with everything.

At ECHO Philadelphia 2026, Flight Medic Berry will be presenting "My IFR Condition" — a powerful talk drawing parallels between flying in instrument conditions (seeing nothing, trusting everything) and what it means to navigate life's darkest storms as a first responder. When visibility is zero, how do you keep going? You trust the instruments. You trust yourself.

And if that wasn't enough — he's also set to speak at the NC EMS Expo this May AND is putting the finishing touches on his first book, "My IFR Condition," coming soon.
