That person didn’t disappear — they’ve just been waiting for a reason to come back.

Probably the toughest chaplain in Northwest PA just earned his blue belt.
🟦🟦🟦🟦⬛️⬛️⬛️🟦

Last night was an awesome and really rewarding night at Good Karma.

We had a bunch of our students earn stripes on their white belts, but the big moment of the night was watching Reverend Dustin Heath earn his blue belt in Gracie Jiu Jitsu.

Dustin is a chaplain at our local hospital, a dedicated father and husband, and a man who spends his life serving God and others.

He is also one tough dude.

Blue belt is the first colored rank in Gracie Jiu Jitsu, and Dustin has been working toward this one for several years.

To earn it, he had to demonstrate the technical material from all 42 lessons of our Fundamentals Program, recite and live our Good Karma Creed, and then make it through upwards of 20 rounds of escapes from some of the worst positions and pins in Jiu Jitsu.

Then came the clinch drill.

Defend strikes. Close the distance. Clinch. Takedown.

Again and again against an aggressive striking opponent.

It was a hard test. It is supposed to be.

But what I am most proud of isn’t just the Jiu Jitsu Dustin has developed over the last several years. It’s the kind of man wearing the belt.

A good husband and father. A kind and dependable training partner. A man of faith who serves God and others every day.

Well done, Reverend Heath. You earned every bit of that blue belt, and I am incredibly proud of you!

And congratulations to everyone who earned stripes last night. It was a really good night at Good Karma. 🙏🥋

Give Rev. Heath some love in the comments! 👏

GOOD KARMA SUMMER GET TOGETHER

Every summer since we opened Good Karma Jiu Jitsu Academy, we’ve made it a tradition to get together outside the academy for our annual summer lunch. It’s become one of my favorite days of the year.

I love getting to spend time with my kind of people—and it’s even better when there’s good food involved.

When I dreamed up Good Karma years ago, I never could have imagined the incredible mix of people who would come together here in Meadville because of a shared interest in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

On any given night, you might find a chaplain, a SWAT officer, a surgeon, a small business owner, a middle-aged dad training alongside his teenage son, college students, veterans, and people simply looking to become a little stronger than they were yesterday.

Most of us probably never would have crossed paths otherwise.

That’s one of the things I love most about Jiu-Jitsu. You shake hands, train together, help each other improve, and somewhere along the way, training partners become friends.

Looking around this weekend reminded me that Good Karma has become so much more than a place to learn self-defense. It’s become a community, and I’m incredibly grateful for every person who walks through our doors.

A special thank you to Jimmy S. for the delicious walleye and to Troy M. for the incredible cheesecake. They were both a huge hit… and they also happen to be two of my favorite foods, so I was a pretty happy guy. 😄

Thank you to everyone who came. You are what makes this academy such a special place.

What’s been your favorite memory at Good Karma so far? We’d love to hear it in the comments!

🥋 Tonight at 5:30 PM, we welcome Pat & Heather Madden back to Good Karma Jiu-Jitsu Academy for a special Gracie Jiu-Jitsu seminar!

We’re honored to have Pat and Heather back on our mats.

Pat and Heather are direct students of the legendary Relson Gracie and together bring well over 40 years of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu experience to the mats.

Since the late 1990s, they have been instrumental in bringing authentic Gracie Jiu-Jitsu to Crawford County. As the owners of Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Titusville, they’ve done far more than host seminars—they’ve flown Relson Gracie in on a regular basis, often quarterly, learning from him through countless private lessons and welcoming him into their home over the years. Their dedication has helped preserve and pass on Relson’s Jiu-Jitsu exactly as it was taught to them.

Today, there are only two official Relson Gracie academies in Pennsylvania—Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy Titusville and Good Karma Jiu-Jitsu Academy. We are incredibly fortunate to have Pat and Heather in our corner.

On a personal note, I love these two. I’m incredibly grateful for Pat’s friendship, mentorship, and top-notch Jiu-Jitsu, and for the example that Pat and Heather have set through decades of humility, generosity, and dedication to preserving the Relson Gracie legacy.

We’ll see everyone on the mats tonight at 5:30 PM!

🥋 Perfect UKE for the Month of June: Brandon Wiethorn! 🥋

Congratulations to Brandon Wiethorn, our Perfect UKE for the month of June!

At Good Karma Jiu-Jitsu Academy, being a great training partner is every bit as important as learning great technique. A great uke helps everyone around them improve—and Brandon has been doing exactly that.

Brandon has been consistently improving his breakfalls, base, and movement, shows up with a great attitude, and is someone his teammates can always count on. He’s safe, kind, reliable, and genuinely wants to help everyone around him get better through mindful, quality repetitions.

As a small token of our appreciation, Brandon also received a brand-new Good Karma gi for earning this recognition.

Please help us congratulate Brandon in the comments! 👏🥋

If you’re looking for a place where people encourage one another, train safely, and celebrate progress together, we’d love to meet you.

Another milestone on the mats.

At today’s lunchtime class, DJ and Taylor tested for their first stripe on their blue belts, marking another important step in their Gracie Jiu-Jitsu journey.

Earning a stripe at Good Karma isn’t about simply showing up—it’s about demonstrating consistent progress, solid fundamentals, and the ability to apply what you’ve learned under pressure.

Today’s test included:
✅ Empty-hand standing self-defense
✅ Weapon defenses
✅ Ground control, escapes, and submissions
✅ The principles they’ve been refining through months of dedicated training

Congratulations to both of you. Your hard work, consistency, and willingness to keep learning continue to show every time you step onto the mats.

The journey continues. 👊

Back to Where I learnt 99% of my Jiu Jitsu

Today I had the privilege of training with my friend and mentor, Professor Pat Madden, owner of Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Titusville.

I began training there in 2010 after moving to the United States from New Zealand. After a couple of years of training overseas, I never imagined I’d find an instructor like Pat—someone who regularly brought Grandmaster Relson Gracie to Titusville every few months for seminars and private lessons. Those experiences helped shape the way I practice and teach Gracie Jiu-Jitsu today.

Today’s lesson included standing self-defense against rear chokes and bear hugs, practical knife defense, and a great system of maintaining top control while isolating the arm and finishing with a top armbar without sacrificing position.

Hearing Pat share stories from the early days of Grandmaster Relson Gracie teaching throughout Northwestern Pennsylvania and Ohio was just as valuable as the techniques themselves.

I’m grateful to stand on the shoulders of giants. My goal is to pass those lessons on to my own students at Good Karma Jiu-Jitsu and do my part to keep the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu legacy alive.

Thank you, Pat.
