🚌 Bus Safety Is a Big Priority at McCSEC!

At the McPherson County Cooperative we take bus safety seriously! Today, we spent the afternoon getting all of our amazing bus monitors up to speed on important health & safety needs so we are ready to support each and every one of our students tomorrow.

Our bus monitors play such an important role in keeping our students safe, supported, and successful from the moment they step on the bus until they arrive at school. We are grateful for their dedication and commitment to meeting the unique needs of all of our students!

Prepared today. Ready for tomorrow. Safe travels all year long!

🌟 McCSEC Spotlight: Ashlon Chapman! 🌟

McCSEC is proud to spotlight Ashlon Chapman, Early Childhood Special Education Teacher and a true rising star in special education!

Ashlon was the first recipient of McCSEC’s Pathway to Special Education Program, a partnership between Bethany College and McCSEC created to provide a pathway for students interested in becoming special education teachers.

Through the Pathway Program, students receive financial support and a special education teaching position within McPherson County upon graduation, once all program requirements are met. We are thrilled to see the impact this program is already making—and even more thrilled to see Ashlon leading the way!

Ashlon was also recently honored as the 2026–27 Elementary Horizon Award winner for McPherson, recognizing her dedication, excellence, and promise as an educator.

We are incredibly proud of Ashlon and all that she has accomplished so far in her career. We can’t wait to see all the wonderful things ahead for her and the students she serves!

Congratulations, Ashlon! We’re so proud of you!

We kicked off the 2026-27 school year with our district professional development day yesterday! One of the highlights of the day was recognizing our incredible staff.

Join us in celebrating Ms. Ashlon Chapman, who is our elementary nominee for the Horizon Award. This award recognizes outstanding second-year teachers.

McCSEC and sponsoring district USD 418 were excited to partner with the Kansas State School for the Blind to bring a unique and meaningful experience to staff during district staff development!

Staff had the opportunity to experience what it may be like to navigate the world with a visual impairment or blindness through hands-on activities using different vision simulators, white canes, and even blindfolds.

This experience provided a powerful opportunity to build empathy, increase awareness, and better understand the challenges and adaptations individuals with visual impairments may experience every day. What an incredible learning experience for our staff! 💙

Thank you to KSSB for partnering with us and sharing your expertise! We are grateful for opportunities like this that help us continue to grow, learn, and better serve our students. 👏

Over the last two days, McCSEC has had the privilege of spending time with all of the new providers we are welcoming to our crew!

This group is truly unique and special. We have veteran special education teachers bringing years of experience, some freshly graduated from college, teachers making the transition from general education into special education, and even one joining us after coming out of retirement! What an incredible mix of experience, passion, and fresh perspectives.

No matter where you are starting your career with McCSEC, one thing remains the same: we are here to support you. We are so excited to welcome each of you to the McCSEC family and can’t wait to see the impact you will make on the students, families, and schools we serve.

Welcome to the team! We are so glad you’re here! 💙 ♥️🧡

Today we had the privilege of bringing together our incredible McCSEC mentors and allies for professional learning as we prepare to support our newest special education providers this school year.

Our mentors spent the day strengthening the skills that matter most in building meaningful mentoring relationships, including:

✨ Building trust and maintaining healthy boundaries
✨ Understanding the unique challenges new special education teachers face
✨ Using effective communication and coaching strategies
✨ Practicing four different types of listening to better support mentees
✨ Navigating difficult conversations with empathy and confidence
✨ Recognizing signs of burnout and knowing when additional support is needed
✨ Utilizing the tools, resources, and structures that make mentoring successful

Through hands-on activities, role-playing, and collaborative discussions, our mentors practiced real-world scenarios they'll encounter throughout the year. The focus wasn't on having all the answers—it was on learning how to listen, ask thoughtful questions, empower others, and help new educators build confidence and independence.

A strong mentor can make all the difference in helping new special education providers thrive, and we're incredibly grateful for the experienced educators who have stepped into this important role. Your willingness to invest your time, knowledge, and encouragement in others will have a lasting impact—not only on the teachers you mentor, but ultimately on the students they serve.

Thank you for your commitment to growing the next generation of special educators. We can't wait to see the difference you'll make this year! 💙
