The games sitting in your closet at home make great tools for targeting speech & language! 🃏👀 Here is how you can use the simple game of Spot It to target articulation and vocabulary!

To Target Articulation:
🔴 Use the pictures on the game as target words for specific sounds. (ex: spot, baseball, and pants to work on /s/)
🔴 The child finds the match and must say the target word 3 times before keeping the card.
🔴 Add a challenge: Have your child say the word in a phrase or sentence.
To Target Vocabulary Expansion:

Use the pictures to teach categories, functions, attributes, & associations. When you find the match, have your child tell you...
🔴 What category does it belongs to?
🔴 What does it do?
🔴 What does it look like?
🔴 What’s something that goes with it?

At Justabout Pediatric Therapy, progress is made through play, making fun FUNCTIONAL! 🌟 Let us know your favorite game to play with friends and family!

What’s That Wednesday 🤔

👃🏻Hyponasal speech happens when not enough sound travels through the nose to make nasal sounds like m, n, and ng. This causes the sound to be blocked and sound like you have a stuffy nose.

What does it sound like? 👂🏻 Kids might say:

👶🏻“baby” instead of maybe
🙅🏻“doh” instead of no
👩🏻‍🎤“sig” instead of sing

Why does it happen? ❓Common causes include:
🤧Stuffy nose from allergies or illness
📈Enlarged adenoids
👃🏻Nasal blockage
👃🏻Structural differences in the nose

Happy Milestone Monday from Justabout Pediatric Therapy! 💙

Did you know your child should begin answering simple “what” questions around 12-18 months old? 🤔These questions include “What do you want?” or “What is this?”

These questions assist with expanding your child’s vocabulary, which is crucial for language development. 🗣️ As kids get older, they begin to be able to respond to more complex questions, but remember to start simple.

Common mistakes parents make when teaching WH- Questions are:
👀Not modeling questions properly
❌Overcorrecting mistakes
📆Lacking consistency
🪜Skipping the basics
🌟Ignoring a child’s interests

Sit up and READ! 📖

🏫 Since it is almost back to school, we thought we’d also target trunk strengthening with this week’s activity. Sitting upright at a desk at school requires good trunk strength and endurance. 🪑 When trunk muscles are weak, kids may fidget, put their heads on their desks, bother their “neighbor,” refuse to do their work, or just be silly. 🤸🏻‍♂️ When trunk muscles are strong, kids do not have to waste valuable attention and energy on avoidance techniques. They are also safe from falling out of their chairs.

Situps are commonly used as a trunk strengthening exercise. Adding a ball and a book makes a difficult exercise fun! 😁 Ms. Becky loves reading picture books to kids and tries to incorporate reading into as many activities as possible. To combine reading and sit ups, simply read a page or two, help them with one situp, then ask the child to turn the page. As the child fatigues, add more pages before the situp, to give them some rest. You can monitor your child’s progress by counting how many situps they can complete or how much help they need.

Are you curious if trunk weakness contributes to your child’s school difficulties? 🎒 Ask us for a physical therapy screening. Warning: Time spent with our therapists may also result in a love for reading! 📚

What’s That Wednesday 🤔

📏A goniometer is a tool used to measure a joint range of motion.

During our assessments, this tool helps us determine if a child has the flexibility needed to complete tasks with ease. 🤸🏾‍♀️If we plan to use goniometry, we explain what the goniometer is in kid-appropriate language, and let them “measure” with it first.

If we do not use a goniometer, it is for a good reason! Kids are not just tiny adults. At Justabout Pediatric Therapy, we may spend time playing, moving, and building trust first before attempting any hands-on measurements. 🛝 When we do not use a goniometer, we use our skills as pediatric therapists to observe, estimate, and track changes in range of motion while we “play.” Our range of motion assessments look like... squatting to get beanbags, spraying a sidewalk with water, pulling squigz from a mirror, pinching tiny craft pom poms, crab walking, playing Chutes and Ladders... ⚽🪞🦀🃏

Do you have concerns about your child’s motor skills? 🏃🏾‍♀️Let our therapists use our powers of play to create fun activities and help them move with confidence!

It’s Milestone Monday! 👶🏼 Head control in newborns is a foundational skill and milestone - helping a baby build gross motor skills and engage with the environment!

While playing in tummy time...
A 1️⃣ month old baby should lift their head briefly
A 2️⃣ month old baby should lift their head to at least 45 degrees and hold for a few seconds
A 3️⃣ month old baby should hold their head up at 90 degrees and easily turn to the right and left sides to look at toys and people

Do you notice your child resisting tummy time or having difficulty lifting their head to explore their environment? 📞 Contact us today to learn how Mrs Becky, our physical therapist, can support your child’s early motor development to move, learn, & grow with confidence! 💙

Chalk activities can target skills across disciplines, prompting development in multiple areas! 🖍️

A speech therapist may target language, including describing or following directions, while using chalk!

Draw simple summer pictures or other designs with your child, then practice:
☀️Labeling: sun, shell, popsicle, flip‑flop
🗣️Speech Sounds: target sounds (/s/, /sh/, /l/, and /f/) with pictures
👂🏽Following Directions: hop on the shell, stand under the sun, sit next to the flip-flop

An occupational therapist may target hand strength and school readiness skills during chalk play!
🖍️Practice drawing shapes and letters
🖐🏼Then, grab a spray bottle filled with water to make the designs disappear!

Squeezing a spray bottle builds hand strength and fine motor skills that can support scissor use and functional grasps for coloring and writing.

💗Let us know your favorite way to play with chalk!
