The Association, together with the National Congress of American Indians , the National Association of Tribal Historic Preservation Officers , and the United South and Eastern Tribes, Inc. Sovereignty Protection Fund has issued a joint statement in strong support of protecting the Section 106 process of the National Historic Preservation Act.

Section 106 gives Tribal Nations a seat at the federal decision-making table, helping protect sacred places, ancestral lands, burial places, and cultural landscapes before federal decisions become irreversible. Proposed revisions to 36 C.F.R. Part 800 would expand federal agency discretion, weaken meaningful government-to-government consultation, and fall short of the federal government's trust and treaty obligations.

Once a sacred place is destroyed or ancestral remains are disturbed, consultation after the fact cannot restore what has been lost. Our organizations stand united to ensure Section 106 is strengthened, not weakened.

Calling All Native American Artists!

The Oklahoma Council for Indian Education (OCIE) is looking for a talented Native American artist to help create artwork that will represent OCIE throughout the 2026–2027 year!

The selected artist’s work will be featured across several of our annual events, including the OCIE Conference, OCIE Challenge Bowl, and Oklahoma Indian Student Honor Society (OISHS). The design will also be adapted for a special wooden coin/sticker presented to our OISHS recipients.

We would love to see the creativity, culture, and talent of Native artists from across Oklahoma! ❤️
