🍦 A Sweet Start to the School Year! 💚

We recently kicked off the new school year with one of our favorite traditions—our Back-to-School Ice Cream Social, hosted by the First Steps PTO! And it was delicious!

There’s nothing sweeter than seeing our First Steps families spending time together, reconnecting with old friends, making new ones, and enjoying a special treat.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the afternoon so much fun! And a very special thank you to our First Steps PTO for hosting such a wonderful event and continuing to create opportunities that bring our school community together. 💙💚

💕 Celebrating Our Grandparents & Grandfriends!

Yesterday was National Grandparents Day, and at First Steps, we know just how special grandparents and grandfriends are in the lives of children. As Fred Rogers so beautifully reminded us, grandparents help connect our past with our future, sharing their love, wisdom, stories, and steady presence with the next generation.

Celebrating these relationships is something we value all year long at First Steps. Each year, we welcome our grandparents and special friends to school for our own Grandparents & Special Friends Day, giving our students the opportunity to proudly share a little piece of their First Steps world with the people they love.

Our students also build meaningful relationships with our grandfriends at Sunrise through our intergenerational program. Throughout the year, our children visit the retirement community to spend time together, share smiles and activities, and learn firsthand that friendship has no age limit.

To all of our wonderful grandparents, grandfriends, and special people who love and encourage our little learners—Happy Grandparents Day! Thank you for the important place you hold in their lives and hearts.

Did You Know? First Steps Is Part of Something Bigger!

Did you know that First Steps Academy is part of a nonprofit educational foundation alongside two sister schools in Fairfax—Merritt Academy, established in 1963, and The Appletree School, established in 1979?

Being part of a larger educational community gives our teachers incredible opportunities to learn from one another, share ideas, collaborate, and grow together—and our recent Teacher Workdays were a wonderful example!

Educators from all three schools were grouped by the ages they teach and transported to the campus hosting their specialized professional development session. With four education-focused speakers presenting simultaneously across our three schools, teachers enjoyed a continental breakfast and light snacks while gaining valuable, age-specific knowledge to bring into their classrooms for the new school year. Just as importantly, they had the opportunity to meet new colleagues and reconnect with familiar faces across our school community.

A special thank you to our PTOs for supporting teacher professional development and mental health awareness throughout the year, and to the J127 Education Foundation for bringing our schools together and giving our educators such a meaningful start to 2026–27.

When our teachers learn, connect, and grow together, our students benefit most.

🧱 Building Something Wonderful at First Steps! 💚

We’ve been busy building at First Steps—and not just with blocks! Our students are building new friendships, new memories, new skills, and plenty of confidence as they explore their classrooms and begin another exciting school year.

Building and construction play are also full of important early learning opportunities. As little hands stack, balance, connect, create, and sometimes knock it all down to start again, children are strengthening fine motor skills, problem-solving, spatial awareness, creativity, cooperation, and perseverance—all while having so much fun!

We love watching their imaginations at work and seeing the wonder of learning take shape, one block—and one friendship—at a time.

⚽ We’re Having a BALL at First Steps! 🏀

What a wonderful first week of the 2026–27 school year! From bouncing and rolling to tossing and catching, our students have been having a ball as they settle into their classrooms, reconnect with friends, and jump into a new year of learning and fun!

Now Week Two is officially underway, and there’s even more excitement ahead—including our Ice Cream Social this week! 🍦 We can’t wait for another week filled with happy faces, new adventures, and plenty of sweet memories with our First Steps families.

August Character Values of the Month: Cooperation & Sportsmanship

This month, our students are learning the importance of cooperation and sportsmanship—and gym class is the perfect place to put these values into action!

From working together as a team to encouraging classmates, taking turns, and celebrating one another’s efforts, our students are learning that being a great teammate is about so much more than winning.

We’re proud to watch them build friendships, practice kindness, and discover just how much we can accomplish when we work together and cheer each other on!

First Steps into a BRAND-NEW School Year! 🎉

The red carpet was rolled out, the cameras were ready, and our First Steps stars absolutely SHINED! ⭐

From big smiles and excited waves to sweet family moments and those very special first steps through our doors, today was filled with so much joy as we officially kicked off the 2026–2027 school year!

A huge CHEERS to all of our amazing moms and dads who arrived this morning carrying backpacks, supplies, and everything their little ones need for a FUN year ahead! We know getting everyone out the door and ready for that first day is a team effort, and we loved seeing our hallways filled with so many excited families.

And to our First Steps graduates beginning exciting new adventures at new schools this year—we are cheering you on, too! We hope you carry all the confidence, friendships, curiosity, and happy memories you built at First Steps with you wherever you go.

Today is Teacher Work Day at First Steps Academy, and our incredible educators are hard at work transforming their classrooms and preparing our school for an exciting new year!

From organizing learning spaces and creating welcoming classrooms to planning all the special touches that make First Steps Academy feel like home, so much love, creativity, and dedication goes into getting ready for our students.

We are incredibly grateful for our teachers and everything they do to make each school year meaningful, engaging, and FUN!

The countdown is on! We can't wait to welcome our students and families back on Monday, August 24 for the first day of the 2026–2027 school year!

🍎✏️ Teacher Workdays Reminder! ✏️🍎

As we prepare for another exciting year of learning, First Steps Academy will be closed Wednesday, August 19 through Friday, August 21 for our annual Teacher Workdays.

Our amazing teachers will be busy preparing their classrooms, planning engaging lessons, and getting everything ready to welcome our students back for a fantastic school year!

We can't wait to see everyone on Monday, August 24 for the first day of school! Don't forget to stop by for our First Day Photos before heading into the classroom.
