Sometimes a child who looks like they aren’t trying, aren’t listening, or are simply misbehaving may actually be struggling with something we can’t see yet.

That doesn’t mean it’s our job as early childhood educators to diagnose. It means it’s our job to notice.

Some of the most important moments in your classroom might feel like the smallest ones.

Responding to a crying baby.
Talking face-to-face during a diaper change.
Getting down on the floor and wondering alongside a two-year-old.
Listening to a preschooler’s very long story, even when you’re short on time.

These little moments of connection are doing more than building relationships.

When a child learns, “My teacher sees me. My teacher knows me. My teacher cares about me,” they’re beginning to understand something even bigger:

God sees me.
God knows me.
God cares about me.

This fall, we’re going back to the foundations with Early Childhood 101, a four-week LIVE Zoom training series for anyone serving young children in church or weekday early childhood programs. We’ll meet via Zoom on Tuesday nights this fall from 7p-8p(CDT).

Together, we’ll dig into:

What if teaching young children about technology didn’t require more screen time?

We often feel stuck between two choices: prepare children for a digital world OR protect them from too much time on devices.

But there’s another way.

Technology education can start long before we hand a child an iPad. Children can learn the thinking, vocabulary, coordination, sequencing, and problem-solving skills behind technology through active, hands-on play.

And maybe the bigger shift starts with how we talk about technology in the first place.

Instead of teaching children that devices are primarily for entertainment, what if we helped them see technology as a tool for creating, solving problems, and getting things done?

What if we taught children to see technology as a tool, not simply a source of entertainment?

That shift changes the conversation.

Instead of only teaching children how to swipe, tap, watch, and play, we can begin teaching them what technology is, how it works, how to care for it, and eventually how to use it purposefully.

And maybe that’s a worthwhile question for us as adults, too: How do the children around us see us using technology?

What does faith-filled early childhood education look like in everyday moments?

Monica recently visited WEE School at FBC Wichita Falls, where Director Kim Childs and her team have created so many meaningful ways to weave faith into the rhythm of their school day.

A few things Monica loved:

📖 During Chapel, even the littlest children held real Bibles as they learned an important truth: God’s Word is for them, too.

🙏 Before students and families arrived, the staff gathered for “Circle Time,” a prayer circle where they prayed together for the day ahead.
🎶 During morning drop-off, worship music filled the hallway from a Bluetooth speaker cleverly hidden inside a big wrapped box.

📱 And we LOVE this idea: Kim creates phone lock screens featuring the school’s monthly Bible verse so families can download them and keep Scripture in front of them throughout the month.

These are the kinds of ideas we love getting to see when we visit ECCN schools: simple, intentional ways to make faith part of the everyday experience for children, families, and staff.
