Our preschool students enjoyed exploring station-based enhancement activities in STEAM class. One station focused on developing fine motor skills, as children used tweezers to pick up pom-poms, sort them by color, and practice counting.

Playdough sensory play supports hand strength development, nervous system regulation, and creative problem-solving in young children. Through squishing, rolling, flattening, and pinching, children strengthen the small muscles in their fingers, hands, and wrists — essential foundations for holding a pencil, using scissors, and tying shoes.
In addition, manipulating dough enhances tactile exploration through texture and touch. It provides a rich sensory experience that is both predictable and manageable, making it an excellent resource for children who are sensitive to sticky or wet textures.

Our Pre-K 4 students continue to work on their writing skills, and today they practiced tracing the letter Vv — our letter of the week!
The key benefits of tracing include fine motor development, strengthening the small hand and finger muscles needed for writing, cutting with scissors, and buttoning clothes. It also supports pre-writing readiness by building muscle memory for the straight, curved, and diagonal strokes that form letters and numbers.

Painting helps preschool children build crucial physical, mental, and emotional skills through hands-on creative play. Fine Motor Skills and Coordination Strengthens hand muscles: Gripping brushes, sponges, or using fingers builds small hand muscles necessary for writing later. Improves hand-eye coordination: guiding paint onto specific areas trains the eyes and hands to work together.

STEAM TIME! In this activity, the kids tried to investigate how to build an structure. Their goal was to build the Statue of Liberty 🗽 using clay. The kids are diving into a really fun engineering challenge! The kids creation with clay can stand without a traditional foundation because it relies on internal balance, a wide base, and the physics of center of mass the Popsicle Stick. However, because clay is heavy, flexible, and sags under its own weight, making a tall structure without any support is difficult. This activity started with a simple challenge: can you make a tissue paper “stand up” using one craft stick and two pieces of masking tape? Some kids made a wide base with the tissue, others used the tape, to make the stick stand. Watching the kids’ eyes light up and their smiles and excitement as they discovered different things they could do to create their own statue was so much fun!
Here is how the physics of this experiment works:
How the Clay Stands (The Physics): If the kids managed to make a clay statue stand entirely on its own, they accidentally used some great engineering principles: Center of Mass: For any object to stay upright, its center of mass (the point where its weight is evenly balanced) must sit directly above its footprint. As clay dries slightly, it loses moisture and stiffens, allowing it to hold its own weight up to a certain height.
