Beyond the screen great things do happen:

👉 Many math apps can help students practice skills, but true understanding happens when learning goes beyond the screen.

🙌 These learners worked through multiplication word problems by reading, writing, illustrating, and solving. With teacher guidance, they recorded the problem in their journals, drew models to represent repeated addition, wrote the multiplication equation, and found the solution.

Why is this important?

😎 The brain learns more deeply when multiple pathways are activated. By connecting math to reading comprehension, writing, drawing, and problem-solving, students build stronger neural connections and develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts.

When children simply tap answers on a screen, they may memorize facts. When they read, write, visualize, and explain their thinking, they truly learn.

At PeakPowerLearners, we believe that meaningful learning happens when students engage with concepts in multiple ways—building confidence, critical thinking skills, and lasting understanding.

✨ Multiplication is more than memorizing facts. It's learning to think mathematically.

Vowel teams are two (and sometimes three) vowels that work together to make one sound in a word. Examples:

ai in rain
ea in team
oa in boat
ee in feet
ie in pie
ay in play

Instead of each vowel making its own sound, the vowels join together as a "team" to create a single vowel sound.

Why Vowel Teams Are Important for ESL Learners

👉 1. They Improve Reading Fluency
Many common English words contain vowel teams. When students recognize vowel teams quickly, they can read words more smoothly instead of sounding out each letter individually.

Example:
Without recognizing the vowel team: b-o-a-t
With vowel team knowledge: b-oa-t = boat

👉 2. They Help with Pronunciation
English pronunciation can be challenging because vowel sounds are not always predictable. Learning common vowel teams helps ESL learners pronounce words more accurately.

Examples:
ee → see, green, feet
oa → coat, road, boat

👉 3. They Support Spelling
Students begin to notice patterns in words. Instead of memorizing every word individually, they learn spelling rules and patterns.

Examples:
rain, train, paint all contain ai
boat, coat, goat all contain oa

👉 4. They Build Vocabulary
As learners recognize vowel patterns, they can decode unfamiliar words independently.

For example, if a student knows the vowel team ea in team, they may be able to read:
dream
steam
clean

👉 5. They Increase Confidence
Many ESL learners struggle with reading because English spelling can seem inconsistent. Teaching vowel teams gives them tools to identify patterns, making reading feel more manageable and less overwhelming.
